I am planning to get out of Seoul for a weekend in June. I heard there are some nice beaches on the Eastern coast, but other than Samcheok, I can't really find much. Does anyone have any names I should look into?

I also want to know if Pusan and Busan are the same place. They sound similar and when I see people throwing down 'Corea' I get a little confused.

Thanks,
Ryan

Gyeongpodae, yes, a nice albeit crowded party beach with plenty of food stalls and even easy-to-rent scooters for jaunts up and down the quiet coastal road. I enjoyed a half day there on a friend's advice before heading up to Hwajinpo beach.

Some historical sites to check out too if you wanna google it: Gyeongpodae.

Pusan=Busan.

In the mornings I walk along the second best beach in Busan, Gwangali. In addition to the usual garbage I find--plastic bottles, chicken bones, old firecrackers, medicine bottles, brokenglass---today I found a dead pigeon and not one....drum roll please.....but two dead white-skin furless rats in the water.

I went swimming a few weeks ago in early May and the water was surpringly warm and fluorescent green. It looked like the secret of the ooze from Ninja Turtles. My shirt is stained brown from the water, too. Perhaps just an algae bloom from chemicals being dumped in but I had to buy a kayak afterwards. Now I stay above the water and not in it.

Yes, Pusan=Busan.

Gwanganli is one of the most polluted beaches. I wouldn't swim there if my @$$ was on fire!
Haundae is better, but not much. You've got to go further up to Seongjeong and further north between Busan and Ulsan.
The beaches in Busan are alright, but far too crowded. You want to head for the countryside for more quiet type situations.
If you're going for bird watching, head to Haeundae in July & August!

Thanks for all the replies. Some good names to look up.

That is a great description of the morning walk along the beach. Not exactly the picture the brochure paints, but descriptive nonetheless.
