I was standing outside my school yesterday waiting for the bus to take me to E-Mart. A man pulled up and asked where I was going, I told him E-Mart and he said it was on his way and he would take me. I said no I would just wait for the bus and thanked him. He kept on insisting and I kept on saying no I'd wait for the bus (you're not suppose to take rides with strangers). Finally he drove off.

Is it normal to be offered rides like this? Should I have said yes? Was he just being polite/ wanted to practice his english?

You could have scored a weekly private lesson with him or someone he knows.

He was either wanting to practice his English, or, was wanting to kill you. Either way, did you lose?

If you are a male, I would say no problem. If you are female (especially one who looks "Russian"), you could be making one of the single biggest mistakes of your life.

Yes. In the countryside it used to happen to me all the time, but since I am a bloke and am 6'8" I think it should have been the drivers who were worried. Anyhoo, anonymous Korean bloke, don't even think about it.

ha! welcome to the club! from the korean male's perspective: blonde foreigner = russian prostitute. (and/or easy target.) no, it is NOT normal for strangers to insist you "take a ride" with them. asking for an hourly quote is also not a standard ice-breaker.

Stop worrying and get in the car, do you really want to take the bus!! I don't. Don't take less than $200, cash up front, I can't stress that enough.

In your case in the future when you are approached by a man you don't know in Korea I would advise you to just smile and shake your head "no" while walking away quickly with your head up. Otherwise, you are going to go home with some stories to tell. Believe me. I have known enough foreign women in Korea to know that the stranger situation (if you are alone) generally turns uncomfortable and can get out of control. Be nice but also make your safety priority number one. You don't owe anyone in this country a minute of your time.

definitely never get in the car w/ a person like that. my wife was waiting for a bus and some guy was driving around the bus terminal two or three times searching for girls to give a ride to, or get there number. he stopped where she was and asked if he could get her number, she was freaked out and basically told him to get lost.

she talked w/ her friends and they all agreed that some men use this as their way of picking up girls- showing off that they have a car- thinking it will attract the woman or just looking for a quickie.

be careful out there- this is not the norm but like anyplace- there a few wackos out there

I suspected the guy was a freak and this was not the norm but I thought I'd double check to make sure.

Nearly 3 years ago I went to Gyungju and was walking along a highway on my way to a tomb. As I was walking up a small hill towards the last of the three mounds, I looked over my shoulder and a woman was running up the hill. She eventually caught up to me and said that she saw me walking along the road and wanted me to teach her english. I told her that I was just there for sightseeing and couldn't teach her. She gave me a ride back into town though, which saved me from a 40 minute walk in below freezing temperatures.

That happened to me this morning! This guy was waiting on his scooter at the crosswalk and he told me to hop and and he'd take me to school! Haha. I refused for many reasons.
