My girlfriend has just had to have a CRB check to work in a hagwon. Thought it was just us criminal aids infested native speakers that had to go through that process. Do all Koreans need it now too? |

I would seriously doubt it's an upswell of "OMG! We have to check EVERYone now!". I'd say it was that one specific hagwon, and nothing more. |

I know the two new Korean teachers at my public school had to submit a CRC. For one of them, it took a few days longer then thought, so the VP had to teach some math classes while they waited. Don't know if this has always been the rule, or something recent? |

I know that not all countries require their teachers too...and maybe not 100% of US states...
But...it's very common for teachers in the states to have background checks performed before employment.
Since the vast majority of B.S. in Edu programs also require "practicums" and student teaching internships in public schools...many universities make this a requirement in order to stay in an Edu major.
If you don't pass a background check while in university these days...kiss your teaching career goodbye before it begins.
For me...there's a five year expiration...I must resubmit the paperwork and fee every five years...fingerprinting is performed and filed with your first CHRC, in my home state at least.
Criminal history records check are noble at their core...granted...some US states implemented these programs for the purposes of liability protection...but they do help to "weed out" some of the undesirables.
Are they perfect? Of course not...but CHRCs do provide some peace of mind to the parents of our students...in any country. |

I work at a Hagwon in the evenings. All Korean teachers had to get a CBC done just like me. Interestingly enough, the Hagwon owner also had to submit a CBC as she also teaches (1 class a week). |
