I need some help cancelling my E2 visa.

I resigned from my teaching position. I have a letter of release.
I believe my employer and I need to go ti immigration so I can be given an exit order and my visa can be cancelled.

Is this crucial. If my boss doesn't contact immigration can I cancel my visa by simply handing in my alien registration card?

The immigration office said that ideally my employer and myself should go to immigration together...this will not happen. She said I could just hand in my alien card.

So is she right that if I simply hand my card in at immigration, my visa will be cancelled and I can get another job straight away?
