Debates and flaming get quite heated on here and people sometimes make idle threats about maning-up and such like.

What would it take for you to pop down Gecko's or whatever bar it is that a poster hangs out in and give him/her a slap

There have been reports in various newspapers of people being assaulted over online games and I believe one kid in Vietnam was tracked down and beaten up after he killed a player and stole his sword on World of Warcraft (NickA beware).

So the question is.

What would it take for you to smack a member of an Internet forum? Or to arrange for him/her to have an accident?

Are there too many people out there taking this far too seriously or have these virtual worlds of asynchronous communication taken over from real pubs and social clubs and stepping outside is now a real threat.

I don't know about this forum, but on others the people who have most pissed me off are the trolls who post solely for the sake of interupting discussion using familiar tactics like asking stupid questions, raising irrelevant objections and so on. I'm sure a lot of them are hired for the purpose. They are doing great damage by interupting what might be useful discussions. I'd happily beat them up if I could, but they mostly seem to be on the other side of the world.

There are also far too many people who use message boards to talk to people in a different manner that they would never do in real life. In other words, they try to play tough guy on the computer.

Inappropriate use of an emoticon would do it for me.

I don't find it particularly odd that people get in fights over online games. After all, people get in fights at soccer games and basketball games. I do find it immature though.

I don't understand when people say online chat is somehow 'not real'. No one ever said that about writing letters the old-fashioned way. I just assume people are the same way in real life as they are here. Lots have said they are different, but I figure they are either lying or hypocrites. We all choose how to present ourselves in public to some extent. I'm guessing, but I think the keyboard warriors here were wangttas in junior high school and are trying to make up for it now.

As a rule I usually don't pick fights. Most of the time I can avoid them easily from pure size and intimidation alone.

That being said, I do think people take for granite the reality of the internet. It may not seem 100% real. But it is real, at least 75%. haha. the conversations, and feelings of people are real. Sure, some people may be more upset at losing an inanimate object, as apposed to ones said GF. but in the lives of some of these 'gamers'/Total Nerds that is more precious than a GF could ever be.

After all, it takes several hours and hard earned cash to acquire these virtual items. Not knocking women, but some only take a few smiles, and maybe a drink or two. These virtual items and lifestyles have much more value and worth to some people.

Also, a public humiliation in a bar may not be so bad, as say, an internet flaming. After all, ones peers all over the world, of a sober variety, may frequent said virtual local. While random peeps of mastitudes of in-liquor-i-fication (yes I just made up two new words) would be in these 'real' bars. If you spend years locked up beside your dimly lit screen attaining these equally pitiful virt-u-dwellers (and another one), it could easily be 'no wonder' that a person would get upset if their fragile world got threatened.

'Not to add', what's the inner worker's of the typical dim-lit dweller? I.E. What is their mental framework really like? Is it as stable and well rounded as those of us that choose to frequent reality a little more, um, frequently? I'd have to say that it has gotten more acceptable to waste one's life away in front of our computers. H'ck, it's practically being pushed out the door by those massive corporations of the internet world now as 'the thing to do'. But, there are still those few, and by few I mean many, that don't quite make the cut of the social evolutionary ladder of proper ongoings in daily functioning. It is these select few, these of the chosen, that may just be a little prone to these bursts of 'web-rage'.

Baaa ha ha aha.

But seriously. Normal people probably could potentially phreak out in such a situation, I suppose, and then work very hard to make sure their offender received their comeupance.

Now as for me? If these peeps frequented the same places I did, then I could potentially take offense a little easier than someone say, 2 hours or more away from me. I would probably treat these people a little more like people I actually would meet on the street.

That being said, refer to my first statement. I am like that big ol' lazy bull in the field of flowers. Sure I look mean, and have these huge horns, and steam coming out of my nose, and probably other places, depending on how cold it is outside. But I'm just here to admire the flowers and swat away flies with my tail. Now, if you come mowing my field of daisies, or what ever flower of choice, or waving a red flag in front of my face and trying to ride me home to gran'ma's, then I may get a little offended. That and of course the given, the cows are off limits to other bulls. If all this is taken into consideration, I am fairly certain I'm not going to hunt a poster down. Besides, I am too busy with my field of flowers and my many cows to copulate with.

The last bit's a smidgen of a farce, but you get the drift.

I've had dozens, if not hundreds of all types conversations with all sorts of people in many establishments face-to-face over the years. Times it has come to blows, or even serious threats of blows=0.

I've had a few dozen 'conversations' with people online in the last few years (actually almost all on this site). Times it has come to threats of violence = 2 or 3 times.

Maybe it's because I can be physically imposing and and very effectively put out the 'don't f- with me' attitude when needed, but I believe it has more to do with some guys ability to be tough from the comfort of their livingrooms. These are the same guys who call people names and start stuff when they're in a group of 8.

I've argued passionately with racists, homophobes, extreme right-wingers, religious zealots (Christian, Muslim, Jewish, etc.) and many other people even while drinking heavily. I disagreed with someone here about how fun Korea could be once and he threatened to kick my arse if he ever saw me. Sorry, there's real things to fight about. An online forum isn't one of them. It just disturbs me that these people deal with children for a living.

I like to post on two separate forums. Offer to fight two separate people using each other's forum names. Arrange for them to meet, then hide and watch from afar. Twisted Evil

I used to do this with on-line dating and language exchanges but they started having too much fun.

physial violence is best reserved for violating the social contract. Calling someone's gf a *beep*, for example, or punching their sister. I really don't think anything posted online could be seen as THAT serious.

I don't really understand this yet I find it quite fascinating.

Personally I enjoy reading most of the debates on here, even occasionally wading into the fray with keyboard ahoist from time to time. I could, however, never muster the necessary sense of outrage to give it much thought after I turn off the computer. I know that none of you are real so why get upset about anything you type? Just ghosts in the machine...

didn't quite get the simile/metaphor? Very Happy

Alright I'll slow it down for you a bit.

Bull = intimidating
Lazy bull = too lazy to actually do any physical damage or care
bull likes flowers = example of how little bull cares about the outside world
bull likes cows = he has his usual women that he likes to keep track of in his field.

So I was basically suggesting that I am naturally an intimidating individual, that doesn't usually give a hoot about starting a fight. Unless one went out of their way to stir the pot, and ruin my fun. But more specifically, wave a red flag in my face and jump on my back. And in my spare time I like to think I have a herd of cows, I mean women, at my disposal.

got it? Razz
