Tokyo Customs slip cannabis into passenger's bag
http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/05/26/tokyo.cannabis/index.html
(CNN) -- A passenger who landed at Tokyo's Narita airport over the weekend has ended up with a surprise souvenir courtesy of customs officials -- a package of cannabis.
Sniffer dogs failed to find the cannabis after it had been slipped into a passenger's bag.
A customs official hid the package in a suitcase belonging to a passenger arriving from Hong Kong as part of an exercise for sniffer dogs on Sunday, Reuters.com reported.
However, staff then lost track of the drugs and suitcase during the exercise, a spokeswoman for Tokyo customs said.
Customs regulations specify that a training suitcase be used for such exercises, but the official had used passengers' suitcases for similar purposes in the past, domestic media reported.
Tokyo customs has asked anyone who finds the package to return it. |

The cannabis has been turned in to the proper authorities. The drug was slipped into the luggage of a business traveller (not Japanese) and upon his arrival at his hotel, the wacky weed was found.
Could you imagine if he had a short layover in Tokyo before heading to somewhere like Singapore... Imagine what could have happened. Anyway, the Japanese police said it would never happen again. Blah, blah, blah. |

Don't worry folks. The officer in charge has be "reprimanded." All is good again in the land of the keystone cops.
You fail to see the upside of all this. All you need to do is carry your weed in a container somewhat similar to that described in the article and you have a ready made plea. "It's not me officer. I must have been put there by Japanese custom officials, there is a history of them doing that you know."
I don't even think the j-cops realize what a mess they have created. I'm also wondering what would have happened if everything turned out the way the officer intended.
"Hey Mr. Jones, guess what! We found the weed our officer secretly placed in your bag. Isn't that awesome! Isn't our dog simply the bestest dog ever!?" Knowing that this "bust" would have taken place infront of numerous bystanders I can easily imagine a nice little bit of change finding its way into this man's pocket. |

Would be surreal. I'd thiink I was in the movie Frantic and some heavies would show up looking for it.
Cant see calling the cops either.
"Hello? Does anyone there speak English? English.
I just got to my hotel and theres weed in my bags. Weed. Drugs.
No it's not mine...I don't know where it came from. Hello?"
And you can't leave the country with it. Who am I kidding---I'd be smoking it and opening the duty free. |
