After going through another eight games, we've found a few trends that follow both of these consoles around. Outside of Rainbow Six Vegas 2, our findings didn't show any drastic differences in image quality between the two consoles--nothing compared to what we found when we compared first-generation games in our original comparison feature. The PlayStation 3 generally lags behind the Xbox 360 in high-quality textures and the depth/normal maps that go with them. However, in the same games, the PlayStation 3 sometimes comes ahead with better shadowing and antialiasing. Games on the PS3 do tend to be blurrier than their Xbox 360 counterparts, but the PlayStation 3 games can look just as good as the Xbox 360 games when developers put some effort into it, as is evident with both Grand Theft Auto IV and Burnout Paradise. Overall, the PlayStation 3 outputs visuals that are either on par with the Xbox 360 or only slightly behind.

For all the hype over Cell Processor and PS3's supposed 'superior' technology, the games look identical.

That's because companies are encouraged to program to the lowest of the two (Xbox 360) so that they don't have to spend extra on creating two different versions.

Ever heard of a port? That's often what's going on.

Nonsense. If that is the case, compare the respective companies flagship games:

Gears of War versus Resistance.

Both came out at around the same time, both were programmed specifically for their native systems and both were designed to compete with each other and showcase each system's strengths.

Gears of War looked quite a bit better than Resistance, game play aside.

Sony's next flagship game, Killzone 2, doesn't look like anything which couldn't be done on the 360 either (at this stage of development). Neither does MGS4. Mass Effect could also be done on the PS3. The list goes on.

If the systems really were that unbalanced, then their launch titles / flagship games wouldn't look to be at around the same level.

Yeah ...

I'm not a fanboy for any particular system (I think competition is good!) --

but I often see the Sony fans complain that developers haven't had a lot of time to get used to developing for the cell, since the architecture is so different.

Quality issues aside, the 360 seems to win from a developer standpoint... apparantly the devtools microsoft provides are first-rate.... and they should be! It's one of the comapny's real strengths. This makes it easy for developers to maximize performance and really tailor the game for the 360.

Sony's core strength lies in media, design, and general consumer electronics knowhow. Obviously, with the success of the PS1 and PS2, they have a pretty solid development platform as well... but they seem to be making it more complicated for developers with each iteration instead of easier...

And how long had the 360 been out compared to how long the PS3 had been out when those games were created? Gears of War was hardly something that the 360 people developed quickly. GOW is now very old. Got anything new? Or perhaps a machine that doesn't suffer from a 40% failure rate?

So long as you don't dress up in a monkey suit, walk into your class one day and wail a 100 pound steel beer keg at your kindergarten students it's all good.

Well then, PS3 is just going to have to prove itself, isn't it? It hasn't yet, and it's been out long enough to make a great looking game. With all that "cell processing" and fancy record players and what not it has.
