Grab the Chickens Levi

Ok so the other day I'm in a bar and hear this AMAZING track.
I ask the manager what it is and its Neil Young's 'Cortez the Killer.'
Wow what a tune. So I listen to it a few times on youtube and then check out some other of his songs and start to feel I've found a new best artist to go in my top ten all time music faves along with Cohen, Smiths, Nick Cave and others.
After a couple of days though something strikes me -
I've stopped enjoying his tunes (accept for Cortez) and they all sound pretty much the damn same and not only that but pretty familliar musically to a lot of Pink Flloyd jams too (time for example.)
I really want to like his stuff but can't seem to help finding most of it a bit bland.
Any pointers....?

| I was always perplexed by people's fascination with NY especially all the 90's grungers. A talented musician? Perhaps but nothing that great. |

Sadly, that's where I'm getting at now. Talented musician and guitarist - yes.
Edgy and versatile songwriter.....? Not seeing it YET, despite the fact I can see how his uniqueness has inspired punk and grunge.
Hopefully some of you guys can point me in the right direction.
Anything else as good and edgy as or close to Cortez the Killer?
Not a big fan of - down by the river, hurricane, old man (can deffo see the way pearl jam were influenced there in that one) don't let it get you down... |

Some people just can't stomach his voice which might seem to make everything sound the same...
Let me recommend "On the Beach" or "Time Fades Away" which were a bit earlier than "Zuma" (Cortez)...
One of my favorites was "Stars N Bars" but can't really say that's 'edgy'.
The thing that makes Neil and Joni stand out among all other musicians is their lyrics. Of course, Joni has much more in her repertoire stylistically... |

I had many conversations with grungers back in the day about Neil. Neil is in the same class with me as REM in that the music failed to produce in me the same effect it did in them for whatever reason. Like I said, I am not knocking him for no talent or anything, but I was at a loss for why every grunge rocker in the 90's bowed down before Neil's alter everyday especially when all the 90's commercial grunge stuff didn't really resemble anything Neil seemed to be into.
To myself before Neil became a household name among young grungers, Neil was just a whiny singer/guitarist/songwriter who who was doing something that the rest of the industry wasn't (80's) and his music certainly didn't warrant much of my attention. Some people picked up on something in his style but for me it was always too redundant and depressing. |

Not liking any of them much but on the beach is okayish.
I like the more rocky stuff than the folky stuff.
I like the Smiths, Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Dylans later, more personal stuff, so definately more into the melancholly, strung out, tortured sound than the jolly folksy stuff....
With that in mind guys, any further suggestions....? The needle and the damage done was ok, but overrated I thought. |

| Neil Young's nephew works here in Korea. I hope he doesn't mind me saying it on this board. Kind of made my day meeting him. |

Can you specify what it is you like about Cortez? Is the the lyrics? The music? The whole package?
Aside from the above suggestions, what other songs have you checked out that haven't done it for you?
I'm definitely a fan, but I tend to prefer his folky stuff. That said, Cortez is a great song. |

Actually, not just Albuquerque, listen to the entire "Tonight's the Night" album. Most of it is kind of depressing, but definitely his best (and probably least well known) album in my opinion. |
