First off, I would like to thank everyone on this board for all the info that's been posted so far. It's helped me tremendously in many ways.
Anyway, I will be working in Korea in about a month, so I've been trying to prepare all the required documents, but I'm having difficulties in obtaining a Criminal Background Check. The local police stations all have told me that they don't do it, and sent me off to the courthouse to get a "disposition" or a "deposition" (don't remember which) stating that I haven't committed any crimes.
One of the officers gave me a piece of paper giving me instructions in how to obtain a "Good Conduct Certificate", but having researched what it actually was, I don't think that will be acceptable.
I thought about getting it done through an online service where I basically pay around $20 and it searches through a database of some sort and I can print it out, but I wasn't sure if that was valid, since there's no fingerprinting involved.
Are any of these valid options for getting a visa? Does anyone know of a precinct that does CBC in NYC? |

The CRC here (Harris County) is called a "Letter of Disposition". I'm getting it in certificate form and going to apostille it. I called the dept of state and they said that it didn't need to be notarized for the apostilling. |

A CBC from an online service is not acceptable.
An online CBC from an official state government web site is sometimes acceptable for teachers of certain nationalities who are living in Korea and who are renewing their contract/visa. |

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but is a "Letter of Disposition" only for those with a criminal record, because that's what it seems like when I tried to google it. If it is, then I won't be eligible for it, since my records are clean (well, I haven't been caught with anything yet, at least). |
