I'm under an E2 I was issued November 4th, 2007. I heard a rumor that they recently passed a new law making it okay to transfer your visa to a different job after only 30 days of work.
Sounds too good to be true, but can anyone confirm this? I'm interested in switching from a public school in a small town to a private school in Seoul. |

I'm fighting with my current employer because I wanted to switch jobs. They refused to give me the letter of release. So, I called immigration to ask for their advice. What did they tell me? In order to change jobs without your employer's permision, you must have worked at least 9 months of your current contract. Makes me want to pack my sh*t and head for the airport. Korea Sparkling. |

I too want to leave my school, but have been ther for 7 months. They will not give me the letter of release. Any hope? I don't want to leave Korea and fly back home, I just want to leave my (really crappy) hagwon. |

As far as I understand it, if the school will release you from your contract you can leave anytime. Normally, it just requires fulfilling the obligations in the contract, such as giving the correct amount of notice and paying back anything stipulated.
As much as it feels like we are, we're not slaves and can leave whenever we want. The problem is just the (majority of?) hagwon directors who throw a huff whenever a teacher wants to leave and refuse to give the LOR. If all directors honored their own contracts, then we could come and go as we pleased (as long as we paid back what is due, such as airfare and the like).
If only things were as simple as back home - give your notice and leave. No mess, no fuss. But, then back home, you usually don't get a free flight or two around the world and a place to live all year. |

Maybe... I heard from a friend who met a guy in a bar in Bangkok who said his cousins', mother's, uncle's doctor's ex-wife knew a guy in school who had a friend that had once been to Korea. |

If you have submitted a health check and crc after the December 15 deadline, you don't need to submit it again. I think the main question here is can you transfer your visa to a new employer, as you are able to if you worked 9 months at one employer. I heard rumblings of this, but haven't verified this.
That said, if you want to get a new job, you should be able to do a visa run to Japan, as you had already been issued 1 visa, and supposedly caused no trouble while in Korea. |

You can leave anytime you want. Contracts are broken all the time in Korea. Just don't expect it to look good on your resume.
After your pay day, go to Thailand for a couple of weeks. Apply for jobs in Korea from Thailand. Come back to Korea on a single entry visa and interview with the schools you contacted. In the mean time, stay in cheap boarding houses -goshiwons (less that 200,000 won) for a month until you find a job. Many of these place even provide free rice and ramen.
This way you can find actually go to the schools IN PERSON, interview teachers that work in the schools, and actually get a feel for which school is right for you. |
