|
|
First time I noticed it was in the chocolate bar commercial, "Cacao 76" or something clever like that.
Then I noticed it in the new and oft repeated "X-Canvas" flatscreen TV ads.
What's that, you might ask?
The use of sexy Western models to fawn over young Korean men.
Now, I could give a rat's azz on one level but on another level it's irksome. I mean, I have NEVER seen one of these ads with a sexy (or even plain Jane) Korean girl and a Western guy.
Does this mean all the ad execs in Seoul are dominant Korean men or that it's playing into Korean male fantasies, or is it simply objectifying White women because we all know they're tramps at heart, unlike our virtuous Han women? Or, more to the point, is it yet another public indication of Korean male insecurity?
What say you? |

I say the cacao girl at least is not a tramp at heart. I know her. have for a while now. Worked with her back in canada, then she came here to model for a bit, and just left.
But largely I am gonna go with, men think in terms of sex a lot more than women do. although it's a chocolate add. so I really have no clue. |

you have to be kidding me right?
need I quote the great tim allen?
"More Power! R R R R R!" or the korean equivalent "Moa Powa! Auwa Auwa Auwa Auwa!"
Guys love gadgets and TV's... Don't get me wrong, girls do to. But guys LOVE them. I was drooling over a setup in yogsan just a few weeks ago. |

I don't know but in America, it seems like guys tend to go crazy over things like flat screen TV's more than women do.
I also seem to recall seeing a commercial a while back with Hyori and a white man. |

You missed my sarcasm: of course I don't think the girls are tramps but there is this persistent image among East Asian men and Korean men in particular that their women are soiled at the hands of Western men and our women are just sluts waiting to be used up. Seen that attitude play out here more times than I care to mention.

Grasping at straws there, bruddah. If it's only marketing, then why not have Hyori or some other Korean babe do it? And while the husbands might rule the roost, they still get an earful from the resident mamasan. So she might not like all those Western "tarts" on the screen. Get it? |

Ever seen that commercial with Chang-dong Gun where he's snapping photos of that white chick getting in the car or whatever? She's in a dress and he's fawning over her.
She is nowhere close to hot. Looks like a Canadian from Ottawa with bad teeth.
Certainly not deserving of a Samsung camera commercial. |

haven't you seen the new air con commercial. It has a korean woman surround by muscular white guys. They are keeping her cool by waving oversized fans. |

Okay, first and foremost, both the chocolate and the TV commercials do not feature Koreans, but half Korean/half western guys. Dennis O'Neil and Daniel Henney, respectively. (work at a girl's school without knowing either of their names and you're a dead man)
Also, in the Dong-gun commercial, he's taking a photo of her make up flaw, not fawning over her.
Considering all the western models used to promote Korean products, this is nothing to get bothered about at all. |

Yeah, right. Yet once again you display your insecurities. Ya know, it would be more amusing if you weren't so insecure about your insecurities. Work on it. |

Actually, I have and I'm glad you mentioned it. See, my take on this is that they are "worshipping" and "doting" over her, which is in keeping with the exalted image of Han women in Korean urban mythology.

Thanks for pointing that out but they sure look Korean to me. And I don't think that negates my "concern."

My insecurities (perceived or real) aside, what does it say about the self-confidence of a poster who is constantly trying to find chinks in the armor of another poster, hmmm? |
