				|

				| (For my gf's laptop)
VLC will not play avi's on her new laptop. (Neither will Quicktime, nor will Media Player, nor will her Gom/Bear player...)

I've seen and tried the various fixes online (going into preferences or settings and adjusting different options in there), but nothing works.

Any ideas? What else could she use to watch avi's?

				| What icon is displayed next to the avi. files?
If you right click the file and choose "open with" you should be able to set VLC as the default player.

If that doesn't work then I would try uninstalling all the media players on the comp (although you can only disable WMP, not uninstall it) and re-installing only VLC.

				| If nothing will play the avi's then it is probably either:
 a) missing codec
 b) corrupt/incomplete file.

If a) then try downloading the cccp codec pack. http://www.cccp-project.net/

 If not a) then try:
 i)downloading a different file or
ii) changing the file associations or
 iii) re-installing the players.

				| Another prop for CCCP codec pack. It seems to be the most complete codec/player pack out there. Zoom player is awesome. | |

				| Alternatively try smplayer. Similar to vlc but I've had a few hiccups with vlc and none with smplayer. Also doesn't have the ugly orange cone logo. | |
