Strange question BUT where I live the only pet food to be found in any of the shops is dog food. I've semi-adopted a pregnant cat - would it be ok to feed her dog food do you think? Would she eat it?

I've been feeding her chicken nuggets & stuff from the frozen section but it's getting a little expensive as she is getting more & more ravenous as the kittens grow.

Any cat owners out there have any advice on what to feed a pregnant cat when there is no cat food available?

Go to Costco for cat food, or Toegyero 5 ga (the area just East of Chungmuro Station).

Sorry, should of said that I live in a rural area. I'd have to travel by bus for an hour to the nearest 'big smoke' to specifically buy cat food, which isn't an impossibility but not going to happen until at least the weekend.

Just experiment. My two cats now shun all human food (chicken, beef etc) but go nuts over those packaged, pre-shelled chestnuts. My cat growing up loved cream cheese, cantaloupe, and spaghetti-o's. My two now will sometimes take a lick of yogurt, but since cats are naturally lactose intolerant I'm not sure how much dairy I'd be feeding a pregnant one.

I don't think feeding her dog food is a great idea. Also be sure to avoid these foods: onions, garlic, tomatoes, potatoes, chocolate, grapes and raisins. Some can be fatal and some can cause severe health problems in kitties.

If you can get a Korean person to help you out, you can have food and supplies delivered from these websites:

www.catsnara.co.kr
www.catvil.co.kr

Good on you for taking in a pregnant lady. If all else fails, tuna is usually a huge hit with cats.

Great advice maeil & thanks for the links...I'll enlist one of my co-teachers to help me order some stuff in. I've been feeding her tuna too but she doesn't like it as much as the chicken nuggets...she's a bit of a princess for a cat that's been living on the streets!

A cat that doesn't like tuna isn't a real cat Smile

I LOVE cats (see how I don't fit the misogynist male stereotypes? Smile

I was walking by pestore in neighborhood the other day and there were these CUTEST fucking kittens in the window.. still suckling on mom.

an interesting breed, with that caved in face like someone punched them in the nose.. but the cutest things!

I spent 15 minutes looking at those furry cute things.. then walked away, because had I stayed any longer I might have done something stupid.. like gotten myself one! (that's a responsibility I do not need at the moment) I always took care of the cats we had at my parents house.

(that said.. as Bill Maher would note.. they were REAL cats.. allowed to live and roam and do the things cats do)

p.s. and oh yeah.. I don't buy the "princess" line for a streetcat. Our tomcat at our parent's house brought his "girlfriend " home to our garage.. where she gave birth to 5 kittens.

of course. i wound up feeding them all. The cats were groomed by their wild mother of course and inherited the wild instincts and fear of humans, except when it came to to feed them.. and they gradually, very gradually lost that fear (though never all of it.. I can pet them now.. but they won't allow themselves to be picked up off the ground for any length of time for e.g.)

anyways.. 2 kittens left with mom after a little while.. 3 came back.. by themselves.. one died of an infection.. 2 stayed.. we've "adopted" them.. our tomcat in meantime got into a big brawl and got his ass kicked bigtime (so typical) but this time he caught a bunch of infections and we had to put him to sleep.

so his two sons (figures 2 new tomcats hahah) are now the house pets. though unlike Dad they don't live inside, they live in the garage (though I've let them inside on occasion.. and they like to go in and "explore", preferably getting something to eat in the process"

they're super cool.. but they are VORACIOUS eaters.. and will eat almost anything!!!

SO tell the "princess" to shove her princess attitude Smile

That's a lovely story. Thanks for sharing. I also appreciate the lack of pu$sy jokes - nice self-control.

I order all my cat food, litter, etc. from G-market. Again, a Korean friend should be able to help. Also, if you ask nicely, i'm sure your local pet stores will order in some cat products special (did for me a few years back -- i'm in the sticks as well).

If you do make it to a Costco, that Kirkland Canned Chicken Breast is a great treat! My cat back home goes nuts over it! Kind of a big can so give the kitty some and make some chicken salad for yourself. Just a little mayo and relish and voila! Oh, and after you chop it up good, throw in the microwave for like a minute. It says its cooked but why take chances?

My cat (still in Thailand) would only eat Tesco's own brand Tuna cat food.

nothing else.

Tried every variety we could find but it had to be Tesco's

Use the tiles for reference to how big he is. He can put his chin on the kitchen table when he stands on his hind legs to have a nosey about.

Awwww....he's gorgeous. He sounds like a giant!
Here's a pic of my (feral) cat. She used to hide in the tulips outside my front door & spy on me. Now she will come inside the front door & sit on the mat but if I get up too quickly or get within 2 metres of her she'll jump up, hiss & run out the door. She's happy to take her bodyweight in food from me every day though, and complain loudly if I'm a bit slow in serving it up.

This was a couple of months ago before she got pregnant. She's really only half-grown, a wee little thing.

Our tomcat's gal was also a hisser... though less so when very hungry Smile

I'm so glad I had these stored on g-mail.. now I could upload to photobucketa and share in the pu... ahem.. cat love hehehehhe

i love how i caught in the first 2 pics how the black kitten kind of sneaks up and then paw goes whack.. though gently hahaha

and the last pic is the (assumedly) proud papa and the one son that bore his likeness. Amazingly enough, both dead now due to viruses.

the little grey and the tiger striped remain. I'll have to upload them at older sizes a little later. Now I have to go lift.

The blue eyes on that black kitten in the first picture are unreal! Kittens are so incredibly cute.
Don't know what's going to happen to the kittens this feral cat has.
No-one around here seems particularly fond of cats, they think my feeding of it is very strange. Mind you they don't seeem to hate them. There are a 'pack' of cats that lives in the neighbourhood, between my place & a few of the neighbous on each side & everyone seems happy with the arrangement.
The cats are always scavenging through the compost, which is how I ended up feeding this one. She was eating vegetable scraps when I first saw her, now she eats chicken nuggets. She's really gone up in the world! Laughing

There are many online shops that sell kitty supplies. Get a Korean to help you order if you cant do it by yourself. Also, I hope this little prego cat and her babies will be adopted and spayed or neutered to prevent more accidents.

that poor fucker never had a chance. Not even 5 lives. Caught a virus while still a very young kitten and I had to watch him suffer thru the last days of his life. Vet said he was probably going to die.. and I figured.. well I'll let nature handle it.

let me give you a little 411 on what's likely to happen with your preggers cat.

I've been thru several domesticated female cat births as well as several wild cat births.

Generally speaking.. the mom's maternal instinct kicks in and she will NOT be happy if you discover her "lair" where she gave birth and will be even less pleased if you touch and handle the kittens while very very young though the domesticated cat will allow it. She'll never hiss, but the wild cat will hiss fiercely if you encroach the lair, much less handle a kitten. She'll likely hide them so you cannot.

Bottom line is both are likely to MOVE the kittens and the "lair" to a different place where she'll hope you won't find/disturb them. The difference is the domesticated cat will move them to a different place in the house (where you'll obviously find them) but the wild one is likely to take them off premises where you will not.

if you plan on domesticating one of the kittens you have a very very short frame with which to do it. You will basically have to take it away from the wild mother, just as they clumsily start scampering around, but are too clumsy to get away from you if you are fast. Guess what, they already start hissing at you at that tender age too.. tiny little kittens like that Smile they learn quickly from mom. The moment they get a little more developed (within a mere matter of a week or two, you'll never catch them again)

but if they stick around.. and you feed them, they will slowly get used to you.. and eventually will let you pet them, especially when coming to eat.
