With the post about choosing strong passwords, I just wondered what peoples' opinions on password managers were. I have pretty good passwords for my various online accounts, but it's getting to the point where it's difficult to remember everything (and also, security resource sites generally recommend changing passwords periodically).

Is it a good idea to use a password or identity manager? If so, does anyone have any recommendations (online or offline)?

yeah now all I need to do is crack one password and I have access to everything. Good idea.

also how do you know that the PWmanager doesn't call home? Most people don't even use a firewall so would never know if all their passwords were being sent to the guy writing the software.

I say just remember your passwords and never write them down anywhere. Be sure to use a mix of upper and lower case along with numbers and symbols and you'll be safe.

Firefox has a built in master password function.

I would not trust 3rd party password collectors either. One day these Indian and Chinese programmers will take over the World and this is the information they will use.

My strategy for strong passwords is simple:

- get an Asian girlfriend/wife with a long and strange name (Thai or Vietnamese is good),

- replace all letters that look like numbers (I, O, E...) with numbers (1, 0, 3...)

- break up/divorce to isolate yourself and make it harder for hackers

- for added security attach the nickname in a different case

Meets all requirements of our corporate IT rules and results in 20+ character passwords. Easy to remember. If you need more passwords just date more girls! Safe computing (and practice safe sex!).
