This was too hilarious not to share.
I went for dinner and some light shopping with a friend. I live in a small town and I got back at around 10 pm. I needed cash and thought I might get it now instead of tomorrow. The atm machine spat out my card and an alarm went off. I was confused.
I head out the door but it was completely locked. I couldn't get out. All the lights were automatically shut off as well. I banged and banged on the door but no one saw me. I called the police for help in my broken Korean (the whole 10 korean words I know). He understood what happened but at this time someone outside saw me.
He calls the number on the door and then told me there's a latch on top of the door. Being 5 1 I couldn't reach it. I jumped and jumped and couldn't get it. I then stood on my shopping bag and freed myself. The man gave me a "what an idiot" look but I thanked him anyway.
10 mins later the police called and asked me where I was. Again using the 10 korean words I knew, I told him what happened and apologized. To my surprise, he laughed and said it was ok & not a problem. I was so shocked! I thought they would be pissed and a half...
Why would the bank atm close that early?? Sucks..been here 9 months and only find this out today.. |

Haha...that happened to me one time. I put my card in and the machine stalled or something. The flashing lights and this siren went off...I freaked but couldn't leave cause the machine wouldn't spit my card out. Then the chain wall started coming down and I didn't budge. Luckily a Korean man saw what was happening and jumped in with me. I was only here about 3 months...but I swear I remember him mumbling something about "babo."
He knew what to do and got us out about ten minutes later. Very embaressing moment in Korea. |

It happened to me too, minus the being locked in part. It was a bank ATM at a subway station. I went in, put my card in and started my transaction. Halfway through the transaction, the shutter on the door starts to descend. Holy shit! I'm gonna be locked in!! Pressing cancel on the ATM like a demon to get my card out, and race to the shutter just in time to get my hand underneath it and stop it. It must be rigged like an elevator door because after pulling up on the shutter a little, the gears kicked in and it raised up by itself. Whew. Embarassing situation averted.

They all do. Use ATMs not enclosed by anything, and you'll be fine. |

halfway through? Damn scary! The bank I was at didn't have the shutter..it had regular glass doors that you push/pull. I was so shocked when I was suddenly locked in.
What time do these suckers typically close anyway? I think 10 is a bit early to be locking it down. |

These stories are funny. Note to self....only visit ATMs in daylight hours. |

All ATM enclosures are locked down at 10. They typically open again at, I believe, 7am. |
