Sales of Spam rise as consumers trim food costs By EMILY FREDRIX, AP Business Writer

Love it, hate it or laugh at it at least it's inexpensive.
Sales of Spam that much maligned meat are rising as consumers are turning more to lunch meats and other lower-cost foods to extend their already stretched food budgets.
What was once cheeky, silly and the subject of a musical (as Monty Python mocked the meat in a can), is now back on the table as people turn to the once-snubbed meat as costs rise, analysts say.
Food prices are increasing faster than they've risen since 1990, at 4 percent in the U.S. last year, according to the Agriculture Department. Many staples are rising even faster, with white bread up 13 percent last year, bacon up 7 percent and peanut butter up 9 percent.

My first night in Korea... Not knowing anything about the language or country, I decided to go to the supermarket at 10 PM. I bought one Coke, some samgyupsal thinking it was bacon, some eggs, a loaf of bread, and a can of Spam.
I knew that if all else failed, I could survive on Spam.

Ha. That is exactly what I always kept on hand while living in South Korea. Not so bad. Tastes like chicken.
Always frustrating that I never could locate any white-shelled eggs. |

That sketch probably accounted for the death of Spam in England. It died out in the 90's. It's very hard to get hold of now in supermarkets. You can usually only buy it in delicatessens now, which to me now classes it as a 'posh' meat. |

Indeed, but smells like cat food. And, it's hard to get past the aspic jelly that coats it.

Back when I was a newbie and scouting around for basic essential foods, I mentioned to my first Korean friend that I'd been unable to spot any ham in the grocery store. When he said all Korean grocery stores carry it, my lit up like a Christmas tree and off we went to the store. I'm sure you can imagine my chagrin when he pointed to shelf after shelf of Spam. I very nearly shed my tears.
Rather than resort to a non-food like Spam, I would just reduce the amount of meat in a stir-fry. |

Hey, we used to grow pinto beans when I was a kid on the farm. They were great! The musical fruit... |
