|
|
I had a student try to bribe me at the end of a class after the midterm test. I of course declined to accept the money. Weeks later she comes to the main office of the department with a box marked "towel, handkerchief, etc.". For those of you who have worked in public schools it looked like your basic, generic complimentary towel or some other perfunctory gift. I accepted it, thinking this is what it was, along with some pizza bread from wherever.
I went back to my office and chucked it into a drawer. Two weeks later I opened it and it had $100 in gift certificates and some socks along with a letter written in Korean. I got my girlfriend to read it and it's pretty much an apology for not being a better student and not being a "brown-noser" (Korean translation for it anyway).
I didn't modify her grade. She got a C+ which she deserved.
So now what? Am I going to get fired if someone finds out I unwittingly accepted cash? I really had no idea the box contained a bribe. In the letter she never asks me to change her grade. So is it really a bribe? |

Tell her the truth, you didn't look at it for sometime and only now found the cash gift and return everything. Also tell you supervisor in case she complains. |

Why would the student admit to bribing you?
If she is that stupid, just lie about what was in the box. |

You need to sincerely show your remorse for your immoral accepting of 촌지. Immolate yourself. |

Funny stuff!!
Ask your Korean counterparts what they do, and try and get an honest answer. In my experience, even in a student-led conversation class (where classroom speaking activity counts the most), the tests are what they hold dear. If they bomb these, in their opinion, give them extra homework, or some other activity to bump their grade.
Of course, if you have the freedom to fail them, then do it. But as I know, students will do anything at test time. It's up to you. |

Tell her that you want cash. Not gift certificates. |

Tell her you want to discuss it with her in private, in a motel. |

Student gave you some towels, handerchiek, and a gift certificate? Obviously, the gift certificate was to be used to buy you and her dinner and pay for a love motel room for the night. The towel was to be used to dry yourselves after a shower, and the handerchief is a blindfold. And the box everything was put in. It is a metaphor for another type of box, if you know what I mean.
Can't you see it's so obvious? |

Contact the student, tell her she actually failed the course, but thanks to the gift-she passed. Then tell her next semester, its 100k per 10% increase over a C+ grade. |

Bribery in Korea is common like the cold.
Some teachers make more money off parents slipping them envelopes then their salary.
I wouldn't accept anything more than food from my kids or parents. |

Tell your supervisor about it. Try to return the money. If you can't return the money, tell everyone free coffee supply for the next month! |
