If you want a natural remedy that takes a little time to put together, but will help relieve the symptoms so your body can catch up then here is the prescription:

Take one or two cloves of garlic, breaking the individual segments apart, slicing them into two halves, and boil them in a solution of 1 quart water and 1 teaspoon of salt. Cook it for about 30 minutes until you have purged all of the mineral properties from the garlic. Then let it sit in its own juice for another 30 minutes. Drain the solution through a cheese cloth or similar cloth into a separate container. Add honey to the mixture to cut the garlic taste (you will still taste garlic, sorry there is nothing to do about this) Once the solution is cooled you can take a small shot glass full 2 - 3 times per day until the solution is gone.

BTW, be sure to brush your teeth after taking the solution. Your friends will thank you for it.

One more thing to add to this regime. Get some whole ginger, which is readily available in Korea. To stop your runny nose and sore throat, wash, slice and boil the ginger the same as you did with the garlic (thin slices is better for ginger, not halves), except no salt and increase the water to 1/3 gallon. This is better to be taken as a nighttime herbal drink before bedtime. It can be mixed with sugar or honey (preferably), to taste. One or two cups before bed time will help you sleep better since the ginger has a sedative effect on the body.

Those two things will help if your cold has not yet reached the infectious stage which leads to strep or more serious conditions. If you are at that stage then you need to see a doctor about getting some prescription pharmaceuticals to take the edge off, then you can begin using the herbal prescription. I just have the sore throat/runny nose/general aches right now. I've taken some Day-Quil that I brought, but it's not seeming to do the trick. Mainly I'd like to get the sore throat gone.

vodka straight at room temperature
sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. but it always make you warmer!

The ginger tea will work on that. It has an analgesic effect and will soothe your sore throat, as well as giving you a sedative effect for better sleep.

I have prescribed this for several people who had the common cold symptoms without advanced conditions as I mentioned in the earlier thread. It will do the trick over a day or two, and it can even be taken during the day time, but make it a bit weaker so you don't get as much of the sedative effects from the tea.

The flavor is quite habit forming and over the period of a week you will begin to like it more. I drink ginger tea occasionally when I feel the weakness and aches begin and it usually fixes the problem up within a day or two. Good luck and I wish you better health.

I mentioned a week, because it would be advisable to get enough of the natural compounds into your system to build up a resistance to the cold germs in your body. These will be flushed out with the ginger residue over the period of about a week. The amount of ginger minerals you have in your system will fight off additional onsets of cold symptoms.

For sore throats I sometimes do a hot salt water gargle with a pinch of cayenne pepper. For something a little more, um, soothing, I also like to dilute orange juice to 50% with hot water, add a generous scoop of honey and maybe squirt of lemon juice.

Oh, and if you have a bathtub, I recommend sitting in a hot bath just up to your navel. Don't submerge the upper part of your body. Get the bath as hot as you can comfortably sit in it, and then drink hot tea. Your head and upper torso will sweat like nuts, and it will be a little uncomfortable, but I find it helps relieve a lot of the pressure I often get with a cold and helps me feel much better afterwards.

to take care of congestion and general malaise I've been getting these pills called 하벤 (i think....pronounced "hah-ben"). they do the trick like day-quill does and only 2000w a pack. I wash them down with red ginseng tonic Laughing

Wet saunas rock when you're sick; I agree.

As for what to take? I used to have some luck, i think, with that Zycam stuff in America. Call me cynical, but for the most part, I don't anything works that well. There's always someone who claims that there's some miracle food or product that will do the trick. "Eat hard-boiled eggs. Lot's of 'em." "Drink lots of orange juice; the vitamin C is the trick." Blah, blah, blah. Just sleep and let your immune system do its job.

I have had this cold for over a month now. At first I didn't take anything since I'm not big on taking meds for just a cold. Then I tried all sorts of tea, and now I'm taking nyquil. I still have the cold.

It also helps to relax your bronchials and in turn helps you to relax.

Also sweating helps to release toxins from your body. Apparently it's the most natural way for people with Parkinsons to alleviate it (a bit), because you sweat out the build up of toxins in the body.

I find that a cup of hot lemon and honey, with a couple of aspirin in and with a shot (or a bit more) of whiskey in it too goes great before bed. Make sure you hit the sack within 30 minutes, because it'll be smack heaven if you don't.

By the way, I noticed that if you have a cold here and drink cold water, Koreans act as if you're drinking poison. What's the deal with that?
