Hello,
In the last hour or two pop ups have started appearing on my screen out of no where advertising anti virus programmes. I ran McAfee and it came back with nothing major. Can anyone give me some advice on how to get rid of this problem?

Thanks.

You might have some spamware in your browser. Run some anti-spyware like Ad-aware, or even Ccleaner.

Yes. Download the free version. Run it, and allow it to delete any spyware it finds.

If none of those work, then search download.com for BHR. That is Browser Hijack Remover. It's a free trial. Run it and delete the browser hooks.

Also stop using any IE icons from your desktop. Delete them and make new ones by dragging the E from the program list.

there is a possibility you downloaded a trojan or malware, i would either look for a trojan remover from mininova.org

or

is it a malware advertisement thing that keeps popping up asking you to buy their software, and telling you you are riddled with viruses, it is probably also slowing the hell out of your computer / internet in general and you can't close the pop up either??

if it is the second one then Mcafee is useless, i had the same problem a few weeks back, i just backdated my computer to a recent restored point, if you have windows just go to:

start -
------ all programs -
----------- accessories -
------------------system tools -
---------------------------system restore

when you are in system restore just click on one of the dates that are in bold and let your computer restore to the previous date...you won't lose and documents or anything like that so don't worry.

It's definitely this problem that i have. The McAfee thing keeps saying that Trojan Horses have been removed. I tried to restore my computer but the furthest back i could go was Friday. When i restored it the problem was still there when i used the internet.
I deleted the IE icon from my desktop. Should i delete the Mozilla icon as well?

try turning system restore off then do the scans, I prefer spybot over adaware (it picked up some stuff which adaware missed)

once finished turn system restore back on

Thanks for all the replies folks. Unfortunately the problem is still there. I have downloaded a program called Browser Hijack Retaliator and deleted all teh Browser Helper objects. I also downloaded AVG ant-virus and am now scanning.
Earlier i had restored my computer to the settings saved on Friday.

Is there anything else i can do?

[quote="Morton"][quote]but the furthest back i could go was Friday. quote]

why was friday the furthest point you could go to? you should be able to go back months and months, unless this is a new laptop.

if it is a new laptop:

if you have the discs, i would suggest formatting the hard drive and starting from scratch.

if you have pictures you want to save, put them on a cd and save them before deleting everything

It isn't a new laptop. I don't know why Friday was the furthest point i could go to. I checked again and Friday was still the furthest back it went. Also at the bottom blue bar i have a Windows security red shield telling me my computer is at risk. When i try to change it so it recieves updates automatically it doesn't work. Is my computer totally fucked?

i don't nor i won't claim to know what the hell is wrong with it, but if in doubt, and you can..... format!!!

however if you know somone who might be able to fix it, hand it over, how much is it worth to you? how much mmight someone charge to repair it? weigh up the options.

sorry i don't know any more on your problem, i would need to see the computer to have any idea what was wrong, and still i prob wouldn't be able to tell you Rolling Eyes
