it seems that i will finally be offered insurance at a new job after working here for over three years in those naughty and probably illegal after school programs that deny insurance benefits because you work under 80 hours a month.
my questions are:
1) if this new gig signs me up for the national insurance plan, will i then have to back pay for the entire time i have been on this visa (since 2005.9.1 with transfers)??
2) if i have to back pay, will they want all the money up front or can i pay installments??
3) if i have to back pay, will i be paying them what i owe plus current employer split payments and be covered or uncovered?
4) would it be better to go with a private insurer??
5) are there any other serious questions i should be asking here??
thanks ... |

I could be wrong...but I highly doubt that there will be any retroactive charges applied. You haven't used any services...and if you have...they've already come out of your own pocket.
Another justification for not paying retroactively is that you have been considered a "part-time" employee up until now. You didn't "qualify" for insurance benefits before...thus...you don't have any "responsibilities" to pay into the system for past work even though you've been here a while.
I wouldn't worry about it.
Go NHIC...less hassles and headaches.
The only question I see is if your employer is going to share the cost from this point on...currently...my contribution based on salary level is 60,000 per month...yours should be similar, or at least in that ballpark...based on your salary. |

Another health insurance related question...
Should my prospective employer provide health insurance for my wife? |

1) IF you keep the same visa (visa transfer and NOT a visa run) then YES, you probably will have to back pay your premiums from the time you entered Korea. You will be responsible for 100% of the premiums (yours AND your past employers share).
2) They will get it as fast as they can (all at once is a very real possibility).
3) You will be covered from the time you enroll and make payments. You should NOT be paying your current employers portion.
4) No, NHIC may still come after you (as soon as they realize you are supposed to be covered) AND private insurance only covers the co-pay (your portion) of medical costs. They expect NHIC to pick up the rest.
5) Why didn't I just do a visa run?

It actually depends on his visa status. IF he was on an F visa then maybe they would accept the part time argument. If he was on an "E" visa then the retroactive charges may apply whether he used any medical services or not.

IF she is a dependent and is legally married to you then she is entitled to be added to and covered on your NHIC medical insurance at NO INCREASE in the premium.
