when i went overland via train from china to tibet, i had to travel through chengdu. chengdu seems to be the jumping off point for tibet, at least economically speaking, these days. it was very peaceful and relaxed a year ago, but i have no idea about how things are now. i'd imagine that you'll have a less than easy time making arrangements considering the current turmoil surrounding china and tibet. i wish you the best of luck though.
regarding the safety of long-distance trains in china, i've had no trouble at all. that includes some significant trips too: bejing to shanghai, beijing to xi'an, xi'an to kunming, chengdu to tibet, and so on. hard-sleepers aren't bad at all, but i know some people feel better about there belongings in the soft sleeper cars. doors, more space, and less people are also benefits. |

| oh yeah! i didn't arrange my visa to tibet prior to entering china, so chengdu was actually the quickest way to bypass the red tape. |

| I took the train from Lhasa to Beijing easily the most pimpin train in china. Not to mention the cheapest way to get back to Beijing. Cost me 1000rmb for a hard sleeper. Very comfortable. It's also not uncommon to pay a premium due to the demand. |

Tibet is a Buddhist country you know. What makes you concerned for your safety? People aren't much different than back home, some bad mostly good.
I mountain biked through Tibet alone and several times I hitched rides with strangers to the next village. btw if you bike you don't have to pay park fees or regional fees. These aren't included with the entrance fee into Tibet. Tibet gets expensive pretty quick with all the fees you'll have to pay. You'll also have to split a car to get anywhere. Which will run you $150-400 depending on your trip and the amount of people in the car. When are you planning to to go? Have you picked up the Tibetan or Chinese lonely planet.. It's a must!
