I was thinking of spending like 10 days in Jakarta and then heading off to Bali for 2 weeks plus.

good travel agents,. prices on flights to Indo, etc?
any advice appreciated. I'm thinking either Indo or the Phillippines (somewhere like cebu) |

We just got back from an amazing trip to Jakarta and Bali. First, I can't imagine what you would do for 10 days in Jakarta. It's a dirty and crowded city, with not much to do unless you are into a seedy nightlife scene with lots of cheap prostitutes. The highlights there are an amusement park on the water (which we didn't see) and a very cool cafe owned by an expat called the Batavia Cafe. Lots of burned out buildings from riots in 1998 haven't been fixed yet. We stayed w/ friends so I don't know the cost of hotels, but I'm sure they are cheap.
Bali, on the other hand, was amazing. Art everywhere, beaches, interesting people and very low prices. Tons of stuff to do. We stayed at a Novotel and a former Radisson for $70 a night and $60 a night, respectively. Both were 4-star hotels. I would spend the whole time in Bali if I were you. |

I have some friends in JKT. The nightlife is JKT is amazing, from the scene you describe to some super cool nightclubs (like Vertigo, at least it was last year)
the hotel prices for Bali sound a little high.. did you stay in Kuta? I was told to try to stay away from that tourist trap and try the other side of the island. |

We stayed in Sanur (on the other side of the island) and Nusa Dua. Depends on what you want ... the art and culture are centered around Ubud, the nightlife is in Kuta. We preferred the Ubud area.
Sanur had a cool village area and some good restaurants.
Seminyak is also quite hip and cool. Nusa Dua had the beach, but not much in terms of a village. Jimbarron is good for fresh fish and watching the sun set. |

| Do any of you have an idea of what a round-trip flight from Seoul to Bali will cost in August? |

We paid $700 plus taxes (around $800) on Korean Air. They are the only airline w/ direct flights to Jakarta from Seoul (though am not sure about Bali, probably other airlines go direct). We flew from Jakarta to Bali on the ridiculously cheap Air Asia, which was less than $100 each after taxes were included.
August is the high season, so it might be a little tough to get a cheaper fare ... but I'm sure they are out there. Whypaymore seems to always have the best rates. |
