Which university in Seoul is the best to work for? Why?

Which university has the least hours? Most vacation?

I am curious about this too...Its seems like more and more uni's in Korea, especially the one's advertised on Dave's, are headed in the direcion of cutting back on vacation time and making their English instructors work at in-house hogwons in between semesters (albeit with extra pay)...What was once three or four months of paid vacation a year is now 8 to 10 weeks or even less, it seems...Are the national or government controlled universities still more likely to give this extended vacation time or are all universities in Korea pretty much headed this direction? This is only a theory, but perhaps the next step amounst the universities, to cut back costs, will be to offer contracts forcing their instructors work over the breaks WITHOUT overtime pay....No I definitely don't believe vacation time is all one should base their job preferences on, but at the same time this is also a little worrying becasue I was considering a university job someday but personally value my free time over making more money....

Academic Pay
Pohang University of Science and Technology has the highest annual salaries at around 67 million won ($52,000). The universities that topped the list after Pohang were Yeungnam University (62.7 million won), Sungkyunkwan University (61.7 million won), Korea University (59.5 million won), Hannam University (58.3 million won) and Hoseo University (56.4 million won). The lowest-ranking school paid an average annual salary of 28 million won. The annual salary of first-year professors ranged from 17 million won at Cheju National University to 43 million won at Sungkyunkwan University.

"The average annual salary of Seoul National University professors is only 37.5 million won," Mr. Sul said. "This is 71st among the 82 universities analyzed and among the lowest at public universities."

Average Monthly Salary of Korean Professors
According to the 2001 College Education Advancement Index' which the Korean Council for University Education (KCUE) announced on the 13th, full-time professors' average monthly wage (before taxation) last April was 4,914,000 won, which is 12.2 percent higher than the previous year�s 4,379,000 won. Also, deputy professors, assistant professors, and full-time lecturers had similar increases in their salaries.

Beginning with the fall semester, 100 foreign professors will be lecturing at Korean universities, the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development said Sunday. "Considering that the annual paycheck of a Korean professor at national universities is 50 million won, it may come as a shock that foreign professors will earn $100,000," the ministry said. "But we believe that is the average amount U.S. universities pay their professors."

Foreign Professors
Foreign professors do most of the heavy lifting in terms of course loads, devoting themselves almost exclusively to teaching. Nevertheless, they tend to be treated as hired hands, without academic standing, and lacking the possibility of career advancement or tenure. They must submit to yearly contracts (compensated at a rate only 60 percent of their Korean peers) while walled off from the permanent Korean faculty who benefit from travel, research funding, sabbaticals, etc. Moreover, when hundreds of Korean scholars enjoy such perks at American and other foreign universities, something is obviously amiss.

According to the Samsung Group's chairman, Lee Kun-hee, to succeed globally, Korea must forgo the thought that Korea and being Korean is superior, and foreign specialists must be treated with respect.

Universities Form Rigid Hierarchy
The pecking order is dominated by Seoul National University. If a student can manage to enter this school (and it is not an easy feat) he or she can assume that almost any career path imaginable is open to him or her. In a nation that traditionally holds university teachers in high regard, SNU professors are granted an almost saintly status. SNU is a focal point for the ambitions and dreams of countless young Koreans -- and their parents, of course. A recent bestseller is tellingly titled "Three Secret Ways to Enter SNU." There is nothing particularly secret in the author's advice. He merely suggests some ways to study more efficiently.

SNU is followed by a small group of leading private Seoul schools. This group includes Korea University, Yonsei University, Ewha Womans' University and Pohang University of Science and Technology (the only major school located outside the capital).
