Local Consumer Intelligence Falls Below Average
Korea Times (June 2, 2008)
http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2008/06/123_25180.html
Quote:
The idea that Koreans are smart and picky shoppers may not be all that true, as the nation's antitrust regulator rated local consumer intelligence with a below average score, Monday....

The FTC said men and women in their 20s scored low because of their irresponsible use of credit cards, while the older generation got marked down for their weak judgment over false advertisements.

Korean consumers are extremely gullible.
On TV there is a drink advertised that says drink this, and you'll get a V line face.

They buy way over priced Korean beef, because they think food from Korea is better for Korean bodies.

Then of course there are all the stamina products.

Then we have Wellbeing Soju, Wellbeing Board Markers (I kid you not)

Actual conversation:

Korean: Drink this it's good for health
Me: Why, is it good for health?
Korean: I don't know, it just is
Me: Well if you don't know, how do you know it's good for health.
Korean: It says so on the bottle.
Me: Then you drink it.

Korean consumer inteligence was there ever a such thing??

Koreans are screwed in the head, they go buy a pair of levis at Lotte for 125k if they walk down the street they can get the same for 80k.. Their excuse, service and I trust department store.. Bizzaro economics..

Then I show them Wal-mart homepage with the same brand/model of jeans for less then 20k. They turn red in the face and still try to justify their overpriced garbage levis.

Women always tell me that their husbands eat Bosintang in the summer because it gives them stamina. I ask what so special about it that gives them stamina? Because some old women told them. No scientific proof no nothing just a bunch of wives tales. Then they usually tell me I should eat it because I need the stamina. I tell them I rather just go to the gym and have a good workout. Then usually they say I can use more stamina, no I don't, I run up to 10 kilometers a day work out with High cardio and High anerobic workout for 2 hours.. Then I just usually flex my arm and show them I have practically no fat any where.. Then I ask them if their significant others can do the same.. At that point they usually shut the *beep* up.

This in the country where a Nike executive said his job was easy since all he had to do was keep putting up the price. Still, same can be said for a lot of other places.

How ironic that "The idea that Koreans are smart and picky shoppers" is also false advertising.

Thank god there is finally "scientific" proof for this.

Advertising and sales are based on false claims and gimics.

Every commercial has a woman in a short skirt regardless if they're selling detergent or bank loans at loan shark rates.

A couple of decades ago Korea's manufacturing sector's salaries skyrocketed because they found out how much their overseas counterparts were making.

Now korea needs to realize how much they are overpaying for the same product produced in korea and sold locally relative to overseas.

You can probably run a business importing Korean made goods from america and underselling it here in Korea. Even with the duties, VAT, and importing costs.

Who ever had that idea? Is this a characteristic that Koreans supposedly have a reputation of having? Or is it another reputation they think they have but actually don't?
