Anyone got hold of a 1TB drive?
How much/where from/etc?
Any issues with heat and noise? I'm looking to use it as an external.
I read that the Samsung isn't as reliable being four disks instead of Seagates/WD's two disks. |

You could always get 2x500GB drives, which are fairly quiet and reliable, for around 215,000. Still a bit cheaper than a single 1TB. |

I own 6 x 1TB drives. I bought from Western Digital. Samsung drives seem to have been crapping out on my at a far larger % than other drives. No problems at all so far.

I weakened and ended up getting a Samsung 750g for 150 + nice case with fan for 40.
I may wait till the end of the year to pick up a couple of 1tbs. Hopefully the price will drop to nearer the 200 mark. 750'll do for now I spose. Thanks for the link and feedback. |

Just out of curiousity, what do you do that requires 6TBs of storage? |

He could host his own forum with storage like that. |

You can do that with a lot less than 6TB. |

Over the many years, I've gone through many hard drive brands, Seagate, WD, Samsung, IBM Deathstars *ahem* Deskstars.
I've found that all of them fail at about the same rate. I've had 10 WD drives, 3 which I've had to RMA, 6 IBM's, 4 which I had to RMA, 5 Samsung drives, 1 which I had to RMA but 1 more which made a strange whining sound while spinning up, but it worked perfectly fine so I just lived with it, and 12 Seagate Drives, 3 which I've RMA'ed.
My advice for Hard Drives, screw reliability. Get whichever has the longest/best warranty period. My favorite now is Seagate. 5 years and they ask no questions when you RMA. |

Failure rates for all tech products are escalating. Mainboards, RAM and HDDs.
I will never buy a 1TB drive, or even a 500GB one for that reason; it will lull me into not backing things up. To lose 1TB of data would be opening a big box of bad.
As it stands, I get by well with 2x250GB (internal), 2x120GB (external). Never ran out of space and if it does start filling up, it forces me to backup.
I guess if I were a big movie/TV show downloader, my thinking would change. To lose a bunch of those wouldn't be a big deal, but work files, pictures and music (rare stuff)...that would be catastrophic. |

And I will never need any more than 640KB.

Yeah, I remember having a 64 MB (that's megabyte) hard drive thinking "That's all anyone would ever need!" That was on a machine with 4MB (that's megabytes) of RAM!
These days I'm thinking the sky's the limit. It's only a matter of time until storage will no longer be an issue -everything will be stored on the internet rendering hard drives obsolete or at least unnecessary- and 128GB of RAM will be commonplace. |

I will get more storage when it goes solid state. Magnetic storage is dead. |
