Obama seals nomination after marathon with Clinton
WASHINGTON - Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois sealed the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday, a historic step toward his once-improbable goal of becoming the nation's first black president. A defeated Hillary Rodham Clinton maneuvered for the vice presidential spot on his fall ticket...
Obama sealed his nomination based on primary elections, state Democratic caucuses and delegates' public declarations as well as support from 22 delegates and "superdelegates" who privately confirmed their intentions to The Associated Press. It takes 2,118 delegates to clinch the nomination at the convention in Denver this summer.
His victory had been widely assumed for weeks. But Clinton's declaration of interest in becoming his ticketmate was wholly unexpected.
She expressed it in a conference call with her state's congressional delegation after Rep. Nydia Velazquez, predicted Obama would have great difficulty winning the support of Hispanics and other voting blocs unless the former first lady was on the ticket.
"I am open to it" if it would help the party's prospects in November, Clinton replied, according to a participant who spoke on condition of anonymity because the call was private.
Obama's campaign had no reaction to Clinton's comments, which raised anew the prospect of what many Democrats have called a "Dream Ticket" that would put a black man and a woman on the same ballot.

I hope AP is right and the race is over. It's been going on far too long.
I don't recall any candidate offering himself for the VeeP spot like this before. It may have happened, but I don't remember hearing of it. Clinton played second banana to her husband all these years, so I think she could do it again. Another inexperienced Illinois politician filled his cabinet with his most powerful rivals and it worked out OK, so it isn't unprecedented. And it would prevent some voters from having a temper tantrum and running to McCain. |

Win or lose, this is really quite amazing. It wasn't all that long ago when things were very different. |

Hillary held on long enough and divided the Democratic Party long enough that she basically extorted the VP slot.
Still, I can't say that there's anyone I'd rather see there besides John Edwards. |

No doubt. Congratulations to Obama's supporters here. Clearly a hard-fought victory. |

John Edwards this year demonstrated that he should never be in an executive position, Governor or President. Everytime I have doubts about Obama, I just try to recall that Edwards was a candidate, too. That usually cheers me up. |

Am watching Clinton's speech in South Dakota.. She just said "no decisions tonight". I guess the lady still has some fight left in her. |

Rather than basking under some 'Obama cult of personality,' as someone suggested, it's just that people are sick of living with the Bush / Republican entourage for so long.
I worry though that it is not over and sealed, yet. |

If you are referring to Barack's nomination, he'd have to be caught sexually assaulting Chelsea on the convention floor for this not to be a done deal.
edit: I hope you're not suggesting something sinister. Like what happened to a certain slain politician? |

Ok, this has nothing to do with policy. But I just kinda like the idea of a President who fist-bumps his wife, references Jay-z and reads farid zakaria. He is America's best foot forward. Young, hip, fiercely intelligent and quite funny.

Ok. Back to the policy speculation. I read his books and don't agree with him on all that much. Iraq is a mess, but I just don't see how to leave soon. I was against the war but it seems to me that the primary concern now should be to prevent an islamist takeover or bloody civil war. It is very complicated. Health care is a mess, but the employer based system is hard on businesses. The economy is in bad shape, but the problems are not really Obama's to fix. But I just like the dude. |

There have been so many curve balls thrown by the state into people's lives ...
It may simply work out - the present incumbent may be dying to realize (get his hands on) his earnings accumulated over the last eight years so will be gladfully and mercifully gone from public life. |

I find these suggestions and innuendos that "someone" is planning to assassinate Obama, just as the military-industrial complex must have assassinated RFK in 1968, beyond ridiculous, hopelessly out-of-touch with the times, and based on little more than wild paranoia.
What evidence do we have that "someone" is contemplating and/or taking steps to assassinate Obama?

Who is "the state?" Who or what is directing it? Why is it necessarily an evil entity and more specifically, necessarily opposed to "people?" And can you provide any specific examples of these alleged "curve balls?" Apparently, too, this represents Obama's supporters' ideology and what they project onto him: he stands apart from "the state," correct?
Another reason to view Obama and his supporters suspiciously. Just what does he intend to do -- and worse: what do his supporters expect him to do -- if and when he wins power this November? |

You could look it up in the dictionary, or you could try my definition: The state is the apparatus and people of government.
Are you a teacher? It's a pretty basic terminology.
As for curve balls, do you not watch documentaries, for example 'American Blackout?'
The Bush administration has been quite opposed to the will of a majority of people. If you can't see that by now, then you never will. |
