I've done a bit of research but the thing is a lot of the websites say different things and/or wrong information. Perhaps they're dated, things change a lot. Anyway, I read that its not possible to get a Laos visa on the border, but heard recently that my English friend could (took 2 days though).

1) Any kiwis get a visa at the Thai-Laos border? If so, how long did it take you?

2) I'm guessing its impossible to cross overland from Laos into Cambodia, seems a very uncommon route. Anyone here done it, kiwi or not?

I was in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam about 5 months ago, and Laos about 4 years ago (Laos was amazing by the way).
When I went to Laos, by bus from Bangkok to Vientiane, I got a visa at the border in about 20 minutes (I'm Canadian). I talked to several people travelling around Southeast Asia during my most recent trip, and it seems that the situation is still the same. I'm not aware of any problems for kiwis getting a Laotian visa at the Laos-Thai border.
As for the Cambodia-Laos border, although I haven't gone that way, I met several people who have, and my understanding is that going from Laos to Cambodia you get a Cambodian visa at the border, but going the other way, you need to have a Laotian visa in advance.
If you have any other questions PM me.

I (NZer) went from Thailand to Laos at the start of Feb this year. No problems at all, took all up about 20 mins I think. Just the usual make-work scheme of going from one window to the next with bits of paper etc to be stamped, and then back again. Needed to have US dollars (35?) as I recall, and be aware that the border posts completely shut overnight (from 9 or 10pm?). Apparently it catches a few people out.

Have fun.

I envy you Cabbage...Laos is wicked, beer is good, people are lovely/laid back.....if you can get down to the 4000 islands, get a bungalow over the water, a hammock, a book and allow a week or two to zone completely out.
