Hey guys,
Was wondering, with regards to staying rent-free at a Korean family's apartment, what would be the typical amount of hours a person usually would have to spend teaching per day or per week to be the equivalent to living there?
A friend of mine is coming to Korea and has an opportunity to do this, but I have never done it before so I have no idea what hours are involved.
There are 4 people, parents and 2 children, in the family. However, my friend would mainly have to focus on the oldest child and father
My friend will be able to stay in a spare room of theirs

Anyone have experience with this? thx

with the right family, a newbie can thrive in that environ

i see only the loss of freedom and any semblance of privacy

how many hours? well... THIRTY MINUTES a day of teaching dirt, dirt cheap private lessons would more than pay for a 2-bedroom apartment for oneself

it is NO DEAL to exchange Korean meals and accommodation for free English lessons, at least not for you or your friend... for the family it's a hellavu savings!!!

If your friend is REALLY REALLY interested in Korean language/culture, or is heavily service minded, it's a good idea.

If they're more concerned with the base line economic value, it's a rip off.

Laughing

Reminds me of the movie Predator. When the dude tells the cheesy jokes...."Jeez you gotta' big p***y, Jeez you gotta' big p***y."

What's the cost? I guess it depends on how much one values his time/privacy/sanity.

Well guys, before the idea gets beaten to death further, I should state that its only for a short time, like under 4 months, perhaps less.
Also, this came up on short notice, so there isnt much time to get a place of her own, which wouldnt be worth the cost anyway. My friend would be looking at 500,000-1,000,000 a month just for rent. Rooming with a stranger is out of the question also, however she doesnt mind doing the homestay thing as she seems to have a positive attitude towards doing it.
She taught in Korea before so she has some experience

We're just trying to figure out how many hours daily/weekly would be reasonable or find out other peoples experiences. Personally, I wouldnt do it, but she's all for it since its only temporary

I was thinking of a scene from another Schwarzenegger classic, Total Recall:
- How long do you plan to stay?
- Two weeks.

- Have you brought any fruits or vegetables?
- Two weeks.

- Excuse me?
- Two weeks.

Firstly, it sounds illegal.
Secondly, sounds like there is no contract so it will be completely up to the head of the household.
Thirdly, has your friend even met these people?
Fourthly, they will be stripped of every right they had in their home country.

Please, stop your friend.

Well, Ive read where people have done it before, so its doable, legal or not. It doesnt matter to me if it is or isnt. The decision is not mine to make.
The parents in the family are friends of mine and very trustworthy and kind people. Ive known them for a year.
But like I said, my friend wants to do this rather than living in Itaewon alone or with a roommate. Not just of the work for rent idea, but just to also spend time doing things with a Korean family
So I wont be "stopping my friend" as its not up to me

So Im trying to figure out a time schedule regarding hours she would have to work. I guess her time is as valuable as the next persons, but on a roughly "average" estimate, how many hours?
