Violence in South Korea Over US Beef

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak showed no signs Sunday of dropping a plan to resume U.S. beef imports, despite nearly 40,000 people holding an anti-government protest marked by clashes between police and demonstrators.
...
Scientists believe mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy, spreads when farmers feed cattle recycled meat and bones from infected animals. The U.S. banned recycled feeds in 1997.

In humans, eating meat products contaminated with the cattle disease is linked to variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a rare and fatal malady.

With the decision to delay resumption of U.S. beef imports, Time magazine might report on it further.

Clashes over U.S. beef in S. Korea

Police in South Korea detained more than 200 protesters Sunday who clashed with officers over the country's decision to open its market to most U.S. beef, state media said.
...
A deal that South Korea and the United States struck in April bans the import of high-risk materials, like tonsils, brains, spinal cord marrow and a section of the small intestine, Agriculture Minister Chung Woon-chun said, according to South Korea's Yonhap news agency. These parts pose the greatest risk of transmitting mad cow disease to humans.
...
But the opposition has promised to fight the FTA until the beef pact is nullified.

"We will be forced to make a critical decision if the government pushes through its plan to announce resumption of beef imports," said Sohn Hak-kyu, leader of the main opposition United Democratic Party, Yonhap reported.
...

Lord knows Mr. Sohn is better at stirring up trouble than he is at, say, actually governing.

Yep, US news outlets are finally giving some attention to this because of the delay. I wonder if it'll cause any backlash in the US?

The Washing Post has noticed.

...
U.S. reaction was swift and negative.

"I can't deny that we're disappointed by this," said U.S. Ambassador Alexander Vershbow. "We think that the agreement that our two governments reached in April is a good agreement, that it's based on international science, and there's no scientific justification to postpone implementation."

Vershbow added that the United States did not "see any need for renegotiation of the agreement" because it provides "very effective safeguards to ensure the health of Korean consumers." He also said that U.S. beef over 30 months old has been confirmed safe in many scientific tests.
...
Cha Yoon-min, 13, attended the protest with his mother, a lawyer in Seoul. "I am afraid of American beef," he said. "I could study hard in school. I could get a good job and then I could eat beef and just die."

As has the White House.

The White House on Tuesday expressed "concerns" about South Korea's plans to turn away US beef imports from cattle more than 30 months old and said it would work with Seoul on the issue.

Now that Obama has clinched the Democratic nomination, the window of opportunity may soon close. And after that, Korea may well be under the Super 301 gun.

And the pro-commie Kim Jung Il group has already plastered my uni with posters showing injured people and basically asking for people to riot... causing more injuries and fanning the flames. They want riots. They want trouble for LMB. As much as possible.

Our students are being used, and it saddens me that our university allows this crap to be plastered everywhere.

Still not seeing people asking why Korean beef costs 4 to 5 times more than US beef which was shipped here from afar. Local meat producers are fanning the flames of this to protect their huge profit-rape of the Korean people. And they're "using" students to do it.
