Obviously us evil waegooks all want more money! Given the sad situation where national holidays occur on weekends for the next few years, more leave would be good!

more holidays too.

it's dumb that some of us should sit in an empty school for most of the summer & winter vacations doing nothing. yes, i know it's the contract, but principals and VPs that enforce it should realize that many westerners operate on the "give a little, get a little" idea

I would add one item...

More control over the curriculum/textbooks and or more control in the classroom.

... I guess that's two... Embarassed

I mean seriously, these textbooks are fine for Korean teachers, but if they want us to be more effective as teachers, they really have to start allowing us to choose our own materials and use them as we see fit.

(I'm talking about elementary textbooks)

People complain about holidays. Back home you'd get a tenth these holidays. In Canada there is only one holiday per year, and it's Remembrance Day (not Christmas).

I think more universiality in the contracts, curriculums and standards would be good in the hagwon world. They have to start taking power over such things away from the hagwons and put that power in an outside body. Give hagwons and inch and they'll take a mile, which has been proven time and time again.

For me, more holidays. Two breaks of two weeks would be so much nicer, or a month between contracts, paid of course. Smile

Uh you're wrong about the number of holidays. Canada Day is a holiday, Victoria Day, Canadian Thanksgiving. I'm not sure whether you're implying just Canada holidays or not. Christmas is a holiday in Canada and Boxing Day, along with Good Friday and Easter Monday. Anyway.......

Maybe it varies from province to province. The only statutory holiday is Remembrance Day where I hail from, it's the only day that employers must give you off or pay massive OT.

I don't know where you were employed, but you were getting ripped off big time.

Most holidays are set at the national level in Canada. All national holidays require the employer to pay employees 1.5 times their regular salary if they work on the holiday. This does not vary from province to province.

The following ten days are statutory public holidays in Canada set by the federal government:

New Year's Day
Good Friday
Easter Monday
Victoria Day
Canada Day
Labour Day
Thanksgiving Day
Remembrance Day
Christmas
Boxing Day

On top of that, provinces have their own additional holidays. They range anywhere from one to six additional days, depending on the province.

hmmm - sort of the reverse of the 'twist a wish' thread here.

If you had a fair contract, then you would expect it to be honored. But that comes down to the 'honorable boss' part, doesn't it?

Holidays? If most people got what is *supposed* to be granted under the MoL's provisions, esp. after the 1st year, that would be nice.

Housing is a huge deal for many - your 'home' here is your oasis, fortress, sanctuary - much like Charlton Heston's in The Omega Man. Smile

A flexi-visa could make a much, much bigger difference in your money intake than most 'good' raises would.

What about smaller classes? More autonomy? Qualified/competent co-workers (foreign & Korean)?

Hmmm - out of all of those, an honorable/dependable (in the good sense) boss/owner combo would be top of my list. With that, all the rest seems pretty possible.

My first job, I really got lucky with my manager/owner. But my jobs after that, everything was an upgrade - I worked my butt off, and proved I deserved what I asked for/expected. All the time, I hear about people NOT getting what they were promised/what they have earned/ what they are legally entitled to. But it can go the other way also - you can wind up getting a lot of bonuses/benefits that are not in your paper contract, as well.

It is possible to create win-win situations for yourself.

Regards,

G.
