Is anyone familiar with a summer 'camp' for uni students at Pukyong National University in Busan and what role Korean TAs play. My friend has been offered a job as a 'teaching assistant' working under a foreigner at a still undetermined but, by the sounds of things, ridiculously low rate of pay. It sounds an awful lot like slave labour. Has anyone worked this summer camp and, if so, what were jobs for TA's like?
This is what my friend described to me:
During the summer vacation there is a English camp for Pukyong University students for 4 weeks program in Pukyong National University The programme is gonna start on 29th of June. Students , teaching assistants , and forein teacher will stay in a Pukyong University dormitory together from monday to friday/ and they can't get out of the dorm during the week . But they can go out on weekends. All members should speak English only, If someone say Korean , black marks will be given to them. Students will have many many activities such as play, assignments, scavenger hunt and so on.
TA will help students' activities with foreign teachers.......... class will be open at 9 a.m , but the teaching assistants have to get up much earlier because of preparation. and the teaching assistants(TA) can't sleep before students sleep at 12 . After students sleep , TA will have a discussion about tommorrow's program and plan for about 2 hour. The head of TA said " sometimes we stay up~" There is no personal free time to TA from Monday to Friday all week long. Oh~ my god! I think this English camp program is good for me to improve my English skills.. but my body strength can't stand it. I can't sleep enough. The head of TA said ," one of TA, a woman, was laid up with fatigue last year." He said " this job will be stressful and exating but you can improve your English and extend interpersonal relations with students, TA, foreign teachers. |
