So I am giving a lecture at a uni and two guys are leaning against each other like they are on a date. One starts playing with the other's chest and pinching his nipples.

I have little patience for ass banditry and heavy petting in a classroom environment, so I said, "why don't you two leave and go find a hotel." It just popped out and shocked my students.

This really is a serious question. What is an acceptable way to stop this 'Brokeback Mountain' behavior in class?

Funny that middle school kids act more mature than university students in a classroom environment. Sorry, I have no advice for you.

Ask them if they are lovers. That usually brings enough riducule and jeers from the rest of the class so they will stop.

I've seen so much of that kind of thing at my middle / high school that I don't even notice it anymore. The other day I had another girl picking through her friend's hair like a monkey looking for ticks. As long as it's not disturbing class or they're not doing their work, who cares?

I had my middle school kids gropping each other and touching.

All I did was act very accepting of their behaviour. and ambivalent to the fact that it's the norm for straight men to do this.

I did this by asking 'oh, boyfriend?'

when they said no, I followed up by 'girlfriend' and pointed to another girl beside them. That way it didn't seem like I was just picking on them.

It made me look like a foreigner accepting of gay behaviour. And it made them think that what they were doing was leading me to believe that they were gay.

And why should it? Perhaps NA / Nothern Europe where girls are afraid to hold hands after age 10 for fear of being called dykes is odd and the rest of the world is normal.

Giving a lecture? On what? Intolerance? Bigotry? Starting sentences with a conjunction?

I was actually lecturing about English. And if you knew more about this subject, you would know that it is acceptable to start a sentence with a conjunction. In fact, two of the three texts that I am using this semester have examples. Many writers do this. Perhaps, you should read more.

In your simple mind, I am a bigot because I don't think playing with another student's nipples is acceptable in a classroom. Ok, I am a bigot. Now, do you feel superior?

It was more the 'ass-banditry' comment. And yes, frankly, I do.

Nipple pinching is not culturally relative.

Then feel superior if it will make you feel better about yourself.

You should have made it a gay threesome right there. Obviously. Why are you even asking? Join the Party!

that's fine, and it probably isn't, but your comment that they should go find a hotel was just as unacceptable. why not just say, "could you guys please stop touching each other and pay attention to the lesson?"

Stands to reason. I hear Koreans telling me they like lice all the time.

Does this touching and borderline groping take place in classes taught by Koreans? I suspect their casual behavior indicates their attitude about English language studies in general. I know a few Korean professors but not well enough to ask them about this situation.
