Phew. A rather slow burner that only really flickers into life in the final quarter, but an intriguing account of a piece of interesting American folklore all the same. Cassey Affleck steals it by some distance. The narrative gets in the way at times, and the inclusion of Brad Pitt is dressing the movie never needed when the story was always going to be the selling point.
Worth a look though for the photography and the excellent Affleck although, your missus will probably be bored to tears and moan that she's missing Dirty jobs on Discovery with Mike Whatshisface.
Available now from all good crooked DVD pirateers throughout the red peppered peninsula. |

I thought it could have been done much better. Beginning 30 minutes were fantastic, ending 30 minutes were fantastic...the middle kind of dragged. No offense to the tangential minor characters, but I found myself really not caring much about their plots in light of far more interesting possibilities for exploration -- I felt as though Affleck's character was underdeveloped, a bit, and would have preferred to focus more on that. Also the camera work, while stunning, seemed a bit "film school final project" -- almost like you could hear the director voicing over, "See how I did that, I repeated the overly long shot of that guy traveling up to the house from far away. Repetition is an artistic tool!" It was a bit heavy-handed in some senses.
But Casey Affleck was excellent, and Brad Pitt was surprisingly good as well. I enjoyed it, I just think that it was a bit self-aware and self-indulgent at times. |

Awesome movie when watched on a good TV.
Great performance from Casey Affleck.
Couldn't really fault the movie in any way. Why don't they make more like this? |

I was also disappointed in it although I'd read and was disappointed in the novel it was made from. I was really hoping the scriptwriter would fix what was wrong with the book. Misplaced hopes.
In my opinion, the main problem was with the Robert Ford (Casey Affleck) character. It was woefully underwritten. In any assassination story the main character should be the assassin, not the victim. This movie missed that key idea.
I found the minor characters confusing. Who was who and what was his relationship to Jesse and why was he being killed? Why was Mary Louise Parker even in the movie? They didn't use her at all. She's a terrific actress but was entirely wasted here.
While the photography was good, Canada where it was filmed didn't look much at all like Missouri and Kentucky. |

Damn...I never made it to the final 30 minutes. It's one of the few movies I've watched in the last few years that was so slow moving I couldn't finish it. |

Good, but not great, movie that requires a long attention span. |

I didn't like it at all...
Unnecessarily dragged on too long at more than one point...
Casey Affleck was annoying..
I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. |

I enjoyed it. Start to finish. High standard of acting. Especially from Affleck. Cinematography and landscape was entertaining all by itself.
Maybe it was a little distracting to have a huge name like Pitt play a secondary role. The movie seemed to be actually about the Affleck character. |

I liked it too. Slow but engaging, and the cinematography was great.
Good acting too. A little predictable though--the downfall of historical dramas where the ending is given away by the title, I suppose. |

hmmm... downloaded it, watched about half and couldn't stand how much it dragged on. The movie was just too slow paced for me. But i'm glad other people liked it. I think my wife, wouldn't have made it past 20 minutes...
Not really high on my list of movies right now... Although Casey's acting was pretty good. |

I liked the movie, a solid performance from Pitt and a great vulnerable, anguished, clear and deliberate performane from Casey Afflek.
One thing I didn't like (and it's no reflection on the movie itself) was how Jesse James was an evil, selfish, concieted, brutal killer of innocents yet people do that whole 'hero worship' thing just because he was shot in the back.
Good. People like him are sh*t. Why are they venerated? Screw em. Why would you be sad that someone like him was killed regardless of how it was done...? He murdered innocent people for crying out loud. |

Considering he was quite famous (infamous) for a long time before he was killed, I don't think that's why he is famous. |
