I saw this job on the Jobs board - the pay isn't amazing, but it's got Uni holidays. Is anyone applying? Does it even sound like a good job (no mention of what qualifications are needed)?

To describe this salary as "less than amazing" is quite an understatement.
24 million/year including severance, it says. So unless that's a mistake, divide 24 million by 13 to get your monthly pay. Comes out to 1.85 a month by my math.
Even if the 24 million is exclusive of severance, it still comes out to just 2.0 million a month. |

I applied actually- I don't have an MA and want to break into the university field. I was planning to negotiate the salary at an interview but have taken a position elsewhere since sending in my application. |

Um...why are you dividing by 13? We get paid monthly, and the last time I checked, there were still 12 months in the year! |

Severance pay is the equivalent of one month's salary paid at the end of a contract. So, roughly speaking, one gets 13 months' pay for 12 months' work. (It's actually calculated somewhat differently, but this description will suffice for the current purpose.)
The ad says "24 million/year including severance." This could be a mistake, but interpreted strictly as written, the severance payment ("13th month" salary payment) is included in the 24 million.
Thus, to obtain the monthly rate, one would divide 24 million not by 12, but by 13. |

Ah! I see. I only took a quick glance at it, noted that it was near Seoul, and closed the window. |
