I am trying to decide between Cheongju and Jeonju for some research. I was planning on Jeonju because it's know as an "education center" (whatever that means exactly- a lot of schoolkids AND a university or two would be good, because my husband will need to find an English teaching job) and also as the birth city of the Yi clan in the Choson dynasty. This is important to me because my research interests are in education and neo-Confucianism, but I want to be in a city of 600,000-700,000, so not Seoul.
Between Jeonju and Cheongju, which is more liveable, and which is better for my stated interests? I know those cities are quite near each other...
Jeonju's also got the film festival, and since I'm a film buff and would love to be involved in that, that's a plus... |

Do you like farmers in suits? Both would be perfect for them. |

Yes, I totally love farmers in suits.
I'm not looking for a cosmopolitan experience here, and I don't even need cheese and spaghetti sauce every weekend. I'm planning to do dissertation research. So Cohiba's rule doesn't apply...
So, Cheongju or Jeonju? |

Thanks, that was helpful, I love you.
Anyone else? (Perhaps who has actually lived in either of these places?) |

I lived in Jeonju for a year and still have good K friends there I visit from time to time - however, let me say this - overall, K is just like anywhere else - you'll find people who accept you and those who don't, depending on your own personality and how well you make friends
Jeonju is considered a "traditional" city - in that regard, it is extremely difficult for foreigners in a certain sense to be regarded as anything other than an intruder - much more so than in Seoul, or elsewhere I've traveled around K. The train station is pretty far from anywhere and the KTX does not stop in Jeonju - why? because the citizens didn't want Seoulites coming there every weekend or some nonsense.
There is a huge music festival in the fall - at the Sori Center - but when I tried a few years ago to find info in English no one could - or would - provide it. Period. They refused, actually. They did not want or welcome foreigners to come.
The film festival - it has increasingly been less inclusive and more censored every year in a number of ways. I go every year but may not this year. As for becoming "involved" in it - unless you are Korean, you can nip that idea right in the bud.
Jeonju Uni is pretty foreign-friendly - Chonbuck, however, is not, they hate native speakers, period.
Yes, Jeonju is an educational center and you're liable to find a certain arrogance that protrudes far above any you've encountered elsewhere or previously.
Cheongju, I can't say, haven't been. Good luck hope this helps. |

I haven't been to Chongju, but I think its bigger and more metropolitan than Jeonju. I love Jeonju because of the bike trails, the river, the hiking trails, coffee shops, and lots of good people to hang out with. I don't think Chonbuk University hates native speakers....not everyone is a hater there. Maybe its a bit more rural so there may be more prejudices against non-koreans, but, that's how it goes here. If you want to feel comfortable all the time, stay home.
My coworker and I went to an Africa-Asia Literature fest in the fall at Chonbuk. It was poorly organized and few people attended, but at least the University is putting forth an effort to engage with other people. |

I like jeonju.
Do a google search for jeonju hub. This guy in Jeonju runs a terrific website, where they have a trivia night, things for sale etc. etc... |

Cheongju has far too many barbarians for my taste. Loads of anti-whitey types, too. |

A thousand apologies for hijacking this thread, but time is running out and we need some pointers from Jeonju residents: Which KOREAN restaurants would you recommend in Jeonju?? I know, I know, it is the world capital of bibimbap etc, but the only place we've heard of is the "Ga-jok hwe-gwan" restaurant, which sounds almost like a government-designated bibimbap factory. Any other restaurants that may be worth visiting?? Sorry again for the threadjack and thanks for any food-related info. |

No problem about hijacking the thread...and keep the advice about Jeonju and Cheongju coming! The Jeonju Hub tip was really useful...thank you. I'm leaning toward Jeonju for sure...even if they're both just hick towns to some of you, Jeonju looks prettier (and perhaps more historical).
And ffilps, I like your picture. |

For the best chicken there is a resturant near a bus station, it's call zig-zags, and they have these holes in the table that keeps your beer ice cold! |
