|
|
I'm trying to determine what the current conditions are at the "best" uni jobs. I know that the "best" jobs aren't always at the best universities. I know that Hongdae and Ewha are considered good so if someone could post those conditions it would be great. Also, if you have good conditions and would be willing to post them (I don't need uni names or anything unless you want to) it would help me out. Please include any negatives as well.
And no, I'm not looking for a job. I like mine just fine |

Good things? Making over 2.5 mil a month for 15 teaching hours a week. Freedom to teach how you want. 4-5 months of paid vacation. |

Great to see you posting; I hadn't see you on here in a little bit.
Also, great topic. I would love to hear responses of others. Lately I heard Hongik seemed to have a really good system going there, so hopefully some of its employees speak up.
Unfortunately I can't post anything as of yet, since I still need to find out first hand what I'll be dealing with. According to a handful of others, my situation will have a big negative due to the administration and treatment of employees. However I'll be sure to keep you informed of all negatives as they arise.
I arrive in Seoul at night on June 12th, so hopefully we'll get the chance to chat in person in the near future.
Take care |

Hmmmm...
I work at a university with good conditions, but I don't really want to post all my exact pay on here, so I will just say that the pay is quite good, and we get 22 weeks vacation and work 12 hours a week. I also don't want to say what school it is. |

Honggik will fire you after three years. However, if they like you, they MAY rehire you after a six month hiatus. |

Having a Ph.D
3-4 contact hours a week, 60,000-80,000 + a year with 4-5 months paid vacation on a tenure-track teaching only graduate students and paid sabbaticals. No publishing requirements would be most ideal.
Having an M.A.
10-15 contact hours a week, 30,000-50,000 a year with 4-5 months paid vacation teaching mostly freshmen, but some upperclassmen and a few graduate students.
Having a B.A.
10-15 contact hours a week, 22,000-36,000 a year with 4-5 months paid vacation, teaching mostly freshmen or conversation in a language institute within the university that may or may not also require teaching children. Chances of finding uni work in Seoul exists, but it is extremely difficult with a B.A. Better opportunities exist outside of Seoul.
I am describing what I think is ideal for each qualification bracket, though some people may be just as content teaching 20 hours a week and getting only 4 weeks of paid vacation. Without disclosing too many details, I am very content at the uni I currently teach at. |

My 3rd year in Korea. Have an MA. I teach at a uni in Seoul - 2.65mil (including housing), work 4 days a week, 12 hours teaching a week, teach the way I want, about 4 1/2 months vacation...and with the other random days off for special events (like sports festivals where you drink and hang out with the students). I get on very well with 90% of my students and they stop to chat when they see me.
I got super lucky. |

15h/w, 4d/w, 4 months vac, 2.5 base, but, if one wishes, plenty of OT. Dep't job, no term limit. Great staff, Korean and foreign. Very good working relationship with Korean professors and administration; foreign instructors participate in curriculum design, textbook selection, the management of extra-curricular activities and scheduling. The downside: we have to participate in a four-day children's camp in the middle of the summer, just at the time when one wants to be somewhere else. C'est la vie. |

M.Ed, 3.5 million, no housing, just over 5 months paid vacation, only 3 consecutive days a week, 12 contact hours a week, freshman and senior grammar classes, pretty good students, some freedom to work elsewhere to top up, ample time to work on PHd and hobbies,
Point to note, Hongik usually lets you go after 4 years (not 3, as they hire teachers with 2-year contracts) unless your teaching record is outstanding, you make a valuable contribution to the curriculum, or take on an important managerial responsibility. |

there may be a ton of positions open at hongik next spring. that huge bunch they hired 4 years ago time is just about up. it takes a lot to stay on beyond that, last spring a couple of very popular teachers were nonrenewed after their 4 years was up |
