Sen. Barack Obama's quick acceptance of Sen. John McCain's offer to debate in town hall meetings across the country might seem puzzling, playing to the Republican's strength and exposing an Obama weakness. |
Quote: |
Yet when McCain made the town hall offer Tuesday, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe not only leapt at the idea but actually suggested a format modeled on the Lincoln-Douglas encounters.
Political analysts see Machiavellian calculations on both sides. |
Be interesting if they carry through with this idea. Make the election a bit more interesting. Also be nice if there was more discussion between the two candidates beyond the customary 2-3 presidential debates. |

I'm curious to see how many times the "Straight-Talk Express" gets confused. |

Had I been Obama's campaign manager, I would have turned down this project. Right now Obama is leading. Why give McCain any debates or forums of any kind? Let him beg to be treated as an equal. |

John McCain is a great man, but his time is passed, he is way TOO OLD.
Age doesn't matter ??? who say that ?????
Men/women of McCain's age usually begining to confuse/forget things, you have to remind them Dr's appointment, time to take medicine...etc

I think it was a good idea to accept. Obama's often said that he held himself back in the democratic debates on purpose because he didn't want to damage party unity, which was smart of him, but that he doesn't plan to hold back at all in the debates with McCain. |

Funny way to say it. True. But funny nevertheless.

While Obama is a excellent public speaker it is not clear that he debates well.
He didn't do that well against Clinton. He won inspite of his debates with her not because of them.
First question.
Mr Obama. You want to withdraw US forces from Iraq but you want to add ground soldiers to the US army why is that. If the US withdraws from Iraq it will have a larger ground force than is needed for Afghanistan.
Please explain your reasoning.
I hope we don't get trendy answer like "we need to have reserve force to defend Korea in case war starts there." (You do know that the main danger to South Korea from North Korea is artillery and missiles and not an invasion.) Or "we need a contingency force" (for what). While the US did not have a large enough army for the war on terror Before the war on terror the US had more ground forces than what was needed.
What could be more important in a military / geo political way than the mideast? Certainly not peace keeping missions.
If it is that you want to help young people then it is cheaper to give them student loans and health care vouchers then to train them as soldiers.
So if the US withdraws from Iraq why does the US need a bigger army?
Is it that you are just following what is popular and have not really set a policy to deal with US security problems?
It seems that Mr Obama has yet to give something more than trendy and fashionable answers to difficult questions. |

I had funny reservations about it as well - as a Obama supporter, at first.
But one thing I have noticed about Obama, is that he is quick to respond to things. Each of the mudslinging that is typical of the Republican Party of the last 20 years, Obama has head-on challenged and came out the brighter star because of it. I'm thinking particularly of Bush's and McCain's comments to Middle Eastern leaders that were negative about Obama, and also the race speech in a response to Rev Wright.
The guy just takes things head-on, very Presidential in nature. Ya gotta deeply respect that. |

This should prove to be amusing to say the least.
I hope some intrepid questioner brings up McCain's infidelity during his first marriage.
The proper question would be "Senator McCain, did you use government resources to commit adultery while still in the US Navy?"
Or at least, why he still has his economic adviser Phil Graham on the bus after it was revealed that it was him who allowed for the overseas tax havens where Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda store their cash.
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Olbermann_McCain_economic_advisor_protected_terrorist_0603.html
Quote: |
Olbermann went on to point out that "on September 20, 2001, the New York Times reported that a single senator had blocked legislation that would have helped US investigators track Osama bin Laden's financial network before 9/11. It was Phil Gramm -- who still defended these tax havens after 9/11, whose bank was still lobbying Congress on behalf of tax havens as recently as last year." |
The proper question would be "Senator McCain, why does you and your campaign advisers support terrorists?" |

If you wanna campaign that way Agent X then why does Michelle Obama take photos with the wife of Louis Farakan?
That photo goes up now.

Farakan is a quack, a racist and a whole bunch of other bad things. But, who cares? Worry about what Obama and McCain believe, not what people they are very loosely associated believe. |

If she doesn't stand up to Farakan then how is she going to stand up.
I am all for tolerance but not for tolerance to Klansman and supporters of the enemy. |

Dude it is just a picture. This 'gotcha' politics is silly.
Farakan is a minor, minor little nuisance. Iran is a major geopolitical issue. They are totally unrelated. Besides, Michelle won't be national security director, will she? |

What is she doing even a little close to a Klansman?
If McCain's wife were in a picture with the Grand Wizard of the Klan she would have some explaining to do wouldn't she.
In any case the gotcha politics started one post above mine. I would not have posted it up if it were not for the post that preceded mine. |
