So since it looks like I won't get my diploma until September or October, it means I will have to miss the orientation for EPIK in August.
They seem to place a lot of emphasis on attending the orientation but on their website, they say "in case of vacant positions" EPIK will accept application at all times. Does that mean I can still teach in Korea starting this October with EPIK?
Thanks! (applying from NY) |

If the EPIK orientation is anything like the GEPIK you won't be missing anything important. Don't worry at all about attending. ALL schools and programs in Korea hire year round. I would say the only months that are difficult or almost impossible to get a job are December, January and February. Those three months are pretty much holidays and vacation time. Any other time including the summer are fine. BoL. |

hey...hmm I pretty new to this,
I am also applying to the epik program and like you I will be graduating this June. Moreover, like you-I won't be able to get my diploma until four months after my graduation (I'll get it during October)-I was really scared because I completed everything and got all the required documents except the diploma (the official medical report is done in Korea). I was so concern so I emailed EPIK and from what I was told about the diploma-if you cannot get your diploma anytime soon prior to the orientation, you should ask the school for a cetification or sealed letter stating your graduation. (And you are suppose to bring in a couple with you since you need it for an Alien registration card and so).
EPIK states that the orientation is important-I think if you want to teach with EPIk you must attend
Also, about the vacant positions, it stated "IF" but there is still a possibility. You email the EPIK people-they do respond back within 3 to 5 days
Hope this helps, And good luck |

As I posted in the other EPIK thread:
Quote: |
Just to give you an idea of the EPIK 'deadlines':
I decided spontaneously in late January to go to Korea & teach ESL. I found myself a recruiter & had an interview with them in early Feb. It was during that interview that they suggested it would be best for me to go into a public school (through EPIK) rather than a hagwon for a variety or reasons that all made sense to me. The only problem with that is that I had to start in less than a month & I still had all that paperwork to do. I didn't book a flight in time, I didn't get a visa in time, I didn't attend orientation & I arrived a week after I had officially started teaching according to my contract; all 'deal breakers' according to EPIK.
But I ended up in a great school and there were no dramas through it all. So my advice would be DON'T PANIC about anything. They want you to come and teach so don't get too caught up on all these deadlines and 'deal-breakers'. |
We really need some kind of sticky on EPIK I think where all EPIK-related questions can go. |

The trouble with your suggestion is -
EPIC is the 'umbrella' organization within the Ministry of Education responsible for foreign English teachers.
The actual administration of EPIC contracts varies from province to province and city to city. What is true in one place may not be true in another. It would be impossible to post accurate information or address specific questions except in the most general of terms.
"Well... it depends." |

Isn't that what we do in each of the several EPIK threads that are happening now? All I suggested we do is create one sticky thread where all EPIK questions can be asked, instead of having different ones asking the same things. How does creating a sticky suddenly turn everything written in that thread into 100% reliable gospel-proof information? |

You have a valid point!
I was thinking that, human nature being what it is, people will read something on a 'Dave's sticky' and take it to be 100% gospel truth. |

Yeah, you too have a valid point. Perhaps there should be no sticky then. |

I missed the EPIK orientation and never really had any problems. I think they are fairly desperate for people and as such hire pretty much year round.
They had a second, smaller orientation that was actually a lot of fun and informative since they had to scale the whole thing down to fit into a weekend as opposed to an entire week. |
