There is no question that one of the downfalls of living in Korea has got to be missing out on football season, in this case I am speaking of the NFL variety.
I have created a Fantasy Football league through NFL.com and I am looking for 11 other team owners to join up for the 2008 season.
The entry fee will be 20,000 won, and this will be non-negotiable and non-refundable. It will be a winner take all pot of 240,000 won. I will require payment up front via bank transfer (I live way down south on the coast) before I email you the password to join the league. The first 11 players to pay will be allowed into the league. Any more teams than that and the player pool gets too thin.
Now...I can already see the anti-pay this complete stranger up front posts rolling in, but getting a buddy to buck up his 20 bucks after he's lost is tough enough....a complete stranger that you've never met on the other side of the country? forget it. The only way I can guarantee that I'll have the full 240,000 won to pay the winner is to ask for it up front via bank transfer. If you don't trust me then don't play, but you can trust that your money is safe and that the winner will be paid in full.
Some more people might say, "just play for free", but playing for free is A. not nearly as much fun, and B. never works out right because invariably people stop paying attention and don't play seriously if there is no prize to play for, especially once they've lost a few games.
I'm not worried about the money side of this though, because anyone who has actually played and enjoyed fantasy football realizes that you have to have something on the line to make it fun.
Here is some of the nitty gritty info on the league:
We will play by the default NFL.com rules which are stated here:
http://freemeeting.6.football.nfl.com/meeting/rules#rules_single_draft
The draft is scheduled for Sunday, July 6th at 10:15am Korea time. I had to choose a draft time when I signed up, so there it is. You can read how the draft works at the above link, and how your players are picked if you miss the draft for whatever reason.
Just to set the rule from the beginning....I will pay the winner 240,000 won if they are in Korea with a Korean bank account at the end of the season. If I need to send the money via international wire transfer then the prize will be 200,000 to make up for the cost of the transfer.
Also....let it be known that if we are unable to get 12 teams then NFL.com will disband our league and I will transfer the 20,000 won entrance fee back to everyone who does not want to try and find an alternative league that allows for less players. But I am confident that we'll find 11 more people who want to play.
I would prefer if interested parties email me directly at [email protected]
Cheers
Mike
P.S. I will be out of town this holiday weekend so I may not get back to your emails until Monday. |

I would be interested in playing, but 11 teams is too small a league.
MINIMUM of 12. (how do you play a balanced head to head schedule with 11 teams?)
how large are the rosters? what is the weekly starting lineup? (e.g. how many wr's, rb's etc)
why is the draft so early. ? Try the end of of August.
I like to play in 14 team leagues, with large rosters.. .. in small leagues, it's pretty much pick your superstar and see which one stays healthy or pans out. |

Really? I've only ever played in leagues with 8 or 10, so even 12 seems larger to me. The schedule would be playing each team in your division twice and every other team once. So the league is divided into 3 divisions, with each division winner going to the playoffs with one wildcard team.
To be honest I haven't read all of the info on NFL.com about exactly how many players we get from each position, but all of that can be found at the link above. Like I said, we'll use the default settings. I have only ever played the yahoo version.
The reason I scheduled the draft so soon is because of the nature of trying to get 11 people whom I don't know to pay their fee and get signed up and to be ready for a draft. If the draft is in late August and something goes wrong or there aren't enough players ready then there is no time to coordinate a back-up plan, plus it would lead people to procrastinate. If we do the draft in July then we can get it done and know for sure that we've got a Korea league running for the entire season. Plus, it's still fair since everyone is drafting before the pre-season and taking on the same level of risk. And agreeing upon a draft date would be impossible...the only way is to set one from the beginning and stick with it.
I know it's going to be hard to get a group of people who are all used to playing one way or another to play with what could possibly be a different scenario, but trying to compromise with that many people who don't know eachother would be a nightmare. It's like playing Texas Hold'em or Monopoly, everyone's got their own way of doing things. That's part of the reason that I set the entry at 20,000 won. Personally I'd rather play for 50,000 and have a huge pay-out. To me a 50 dollar bet over 3.5 months is nothing, but I figured that at 20,000 people could play even if they were in other leagues back home or if the set-up wasn't exactly how they'd have it if they had their druthers. |

To watch NFL games, go to stoogetv.com. They list the schedule and the channel that they will show it on. You can watch it directly on their website. |

Here is a great site to find all of the sports being played on Sopcast and other P2P players:
http://myp2p.eu/index.php?part=sports
You can also pay to watch all NFL games through Yahoo with the NFL Gass Pass....in the past I've used Sopcast, but depending on who your team is the games aren't always on and it is annoying to spend the first half of the game trying to get a good connection or finding the right Sopcast channel since the NFL is working harder each week to not let their games be broadcast illegally like this. So this year I'm going to just pay the $250 and get all of the games. You can watch the games up to 48 hours later so that way you can watch several games each week and watch at whatever time suits you best. I think that $250 is a bit high and $150 like MLB charges would be more reasonable, but that's life and sometimes it's worth a little money to get the proper service instead of the crappy free version. |

I'd join, but my fantasy baseball team is totally tanking right now. What's going on with Vlad Guerrero? |
