CTV Buys "Hockey Night in Canada" Theme"

OK, for you non-Canadians out there, you can feel free to move on to more interesting things.

For us Canucks, especially us hockey fans, the theme has become an iconic part of our culture - a 2nd national anthem, if you will. EVERYONE, fans and non-fans alike, knows this song.

Since 1968 it's been the backbone of Saturday nights in millions of Canadian homes on CBC. And now, the CBC (gov't owned) has lost out in the bidding war and privately-held CTV has swooped in to steal the song.

This would be like... I dunno, like Ferrari deciding not to sell their cars in red anymore... like Jeopardy changing its "Think!" music... like McDonald's selling the rights & recipe for the Big Mac to Burger King... like Gibson selling the rights to the Les Paul to Fender... like GM selling the Corvette to Ford... like Coca-Cola changing its recipe...

That's awesome.

Will be interesting to see the reaction to the new song for HNC.

I remember when TSN got bought out by ESPN and they had to change their music to the ESPN theme. Still doesn't seem right to me to hear it on TSN.

Ya, what a fuckin idiot that exec is. Talk about arrogant. The company representing the composer of the song apparently only asked for $500/play... the same amount they got in the previous contract. I hope the CBC loses a noticable amount of viewers because of this. I, for one, will be watching the games on TSN from now on.

If this were Korea, we'd have riot police kicking girls in the head already. Geez.

As long as they don't replace it with some crappy Nickel Back, Bryan Adams Celine Dion or Shania Twain song, then I don't really care.

It's a fuhkin shame that's for sure! I guess those rum and coke tabs of Bob Cole must have added to the budget... Laughing

Rumor has it that Stompin Tom's classic,"The Hockey Song", will replace it...but then again, can the CBC afford it? Laughing

I wonder what's next? Is it going to be the theme to "Coach's Corner" that gets the axe?

Back to the subject.

I'm certain the deal had nothing to do with money, I guess they want to create something new and fresh.

In my opinion HNIC can do whatever they want, they have the broadcast rights and I'm sure people won't stop watching HNIC because they change the theme song... They'll stop watching because the Maple Leafs are s**t.
