Hey there
Sorry, I can't be of any help since it has been a while since I lived in Yeosu. But I just wanted to say best of luck...Yeosu is awesome and it's a really great place to live.
Cheers!

I'd also like to know more about yeosu, so I'm giving this thread a bump in hopes that it might attract more attention.

There are always public school openings, and I noticed there's a very good, highly regarded Yeosu hogwon advertising for a teacher on this site. I live in Yeosu and love it...weather's great, islands are great... |

Hi Zaria32,
I have a few questions about Yeosu, if you don't mind...
How's the public transportation? My understanding the city is spread out....is a car necessary?
As it is a tourist destination for many Koreans, is it an expensive place to live?
What are the 'creature comforts' like? For example, I've seen that there is a movie theater.....are there any shown in English or only Korean? Are western food items available in the super markets?
How big is the expat community?
Thanks.

Car isn't all that neccesary here, a lot of teacher though have motor bikes and a few have cars. We just get taxis everywhere, vv cheap!!! The city is spread out, I think it was orginally three cities which has now been combined into one. There are some lovely spots and of course the islands. (never heard is being a tourist desintination though:) It's cheap living here, can be a bit qeuit sometimes and there is a really nice ex-pat community. If you're into soccer, a team was recently set up, Yeosu Waygooks FC!!! There are two cinemas here with English movies and Lotte Mart (supermarket) is getting better with western food. It has salsa and olives now:)
Hope that is some help!!! |

I heard the 2012 World Expo will be held there. There will be a lot of new stuff built there soon. This is a very big event for them. I imagine there will be lots of work for English teachers there. |

They are building a five star resort for the expo, a golf course (both are in unusally places, v remote!!) and a number of other buildings. It would be interesting to be here to see Yeosu in 2012 and how they are going to manage the influx of foreigners. At the moment we can't see how they will, but I think that 2010/ 2011, they might start getting their act together!!!! |

Sadly, the new golf course is not remote at all. They are in the process of destroying the forest covered hillside across the road from my university to build a golf course in a place that even many golfers believe is not suitable for a golf course.
And it's all in preparation for the "eco-friendly" Expo. Honestly, Korean shallowness, hypocrisy and empty words know no bounds. I actually teach City Hall officials three nights a week and they are pretty much clueless about what genuine sustainability and eco-friendliness actually calls for. The local politicians have incredibly parochial, myopic vision centred purely on development, with just enough "greenness" to look good.
As for working and living in Yeosu. Nice enough. Clean air by Korean standards, nice countryisde scenery and the foreigners here are a good bunch. It's a bit boring here though. No one to go mountain biking with and not enough variety among the people. |

I didn't realise there is a univeristy near that golf course Duncan!!! I only came across it the other day, we took a drive up to the scenic view of all the islands and drove past it on the way back. We all thought it was a bit of a strange place for a gold course, very hilly, so they really must be taking alot of the landscape away. The hotel resort out past Soho Dong is a bit far out from Sinae and Dolsan!!! |
