Let me guess, they pitched it like you will be getting paid to play games and activities with the students the whole time. |

I think one week at the camp is around 340,000 won for students. Do the math and figure out how much money they're profiting. 2,000,000 is a joke |

two week camp (M-F) from 9-5 is worth about 2.2 - 2.5 million. |

This is a sleep over camp. 13 nights 12 days or the other way round no weekends..
I would say closer to 5 million for that sort of hell. |

I agree. Good camps normally have Korean assistant teachers (uni students) who would take care of the children during after hours. |

Did they tell you that there is no Korean staff to tend the kids during non-teaching hours? IF so, I missed where you explained that detail. Also, if so, that would be the first camp I've heard of that didn't have a Korean staff to tend the kids during non-teaching hours.
Next question. Will your PS give you persmission to work at other camps besides this employer-organized one? |

Oops. I just picked up that detail where you said you finish at 10PM.
That really does suck. |

I got the same fax yesterday, and almost accepted the job. guess i'd better read it again, although perhaps my korean isn't as good as yours, OP. I'm pretty sure I'm talking about the same fax.
It's the same camp as last year, and everything looks the same, so I just assumed it'd be roughly the same deal again. It actually occurred to me that maybe they'd improve things a bit (silly me). Last year we started at 9 and taught till 7:30 (if my memory serves correctly), and they had a whole team of korean university students looking after the kids during meals and in the evenings. so it was more like 10 hours a day, including 2 1-hour-long breaks for meals.
don't get me wrong, it was still awful and i wouldn't be sad to skip it this year, but the money was nice once it was over. the schedule on the website looks the same this year, except that dinner is an hour later (i think). But i'll have to get a co teacher to check over the contract, i certainly don't intend to work 20 hours a day for two weeks.
so, thanks for the heads up. |

NOt exactly 20 hours a day. - I was basing that on the fact that kids are noisy and disturb your sleep.
But from the schedule it is pretty full and lights out at 10pm means a good 13 hours on the go.
But if you did it last year and you think it's ok then ignore me.
I'm cynical and would have actually counted it as 24 hours a day working which would have been 6k an hour but I thought people would get their knickers in a twist so I said 20 to be nice and not be paid for 4 hours of sleep. |

Well, I just had a co teacher call and ask. You're quite right, they expect us to be with the kids until 10PM. Having the evenings free last year was about the only way I retained my sanity, so I think I'll keep my sanity this year and skip the paycheck. I should also mention that last year, the kids slept in an entirely different building on the other side of the campus. That was a nice touch too. Sounds like that's changed too, unless I'm mistaken.
They're trying to give the kids an "immersion" experience, but that just doesn't work when they're spending 24 hours a day with their korean friends. Last year the camp material was geared for high level students, but let's face it, the high level students in Yongin have a high level because they come from wealthy families who would just as soon send their kids abroad for the summer. However, the people in charge last year were decent folk, and I thought they'd plan something more reasonable this year. I guess not.
So, 13 hours a day with low level English students teaching material that they can't get into... good luck to anyone who does that. Love to hear how it goes. |
