I want to thank everyone for all the advice and tips I've recieved on this website the past few months. I'm moving to Gangnam to teach adults for a year. This is something I've always wanted to do since running into some ESL teachers while traveling around SE Asia.
I'm bringing two 50 lbs bags to check in, one laptop bag and one carry on. Went to Costco today and bought three giant bottles of motrin (since I'm a pro racquetball player I'm going to need it), a years supply of deoderant, Pepto, and lots of clothes (dress and casual). Oh yeah, also bed sheets, racquetball racquets and a badmitton racquet. I think I'm ready.

thanks again.

Bring your Costco card, as well! (you can always buy another bag here).

Sounds like you are prepped - as a pro-raquetball player, you should be able to schmooze yoursellf free clothes/shoes pretty soon, as well.

Congrats on the decision/position/move-to-come, and all the best of luck to you.

Regards,

G.

If you are tall and have big weigook feet... Don't forget to bring larger sized shoes, especially since you are an athlete as the shoes they sell here in our sizes suck and are poorer quality than the norm.

thanks guys,
Yeah, I have big feet I guess. Size 11 in US. I'm bringing 2 pairs of tennis shoes and two dress shoes.
my problem right now is my two check on bags are about 50lbs each and theirs more things I want to bring. I have some t-shirts that I'm going to have to leave behind, also, I don't know how I'm going to fit the sheets in there. I was told that it was a good idea to bring sheets.
Even my carry on is getting kind of full, it's just a backpack. I'll have my laptop bag also which i wanted to have room for in the carry on incase they tell me I can't have both.

Good on you-I know overpacking was tough-I had a charitable guy in Ottawa and Toronto as it was 87 pounds in the hockey bag and not charged, but one thing you want in winter-hot water bottles!

Why hot water bottles? I should have heating and air.

If you have a drafty apartment, it keeps the heating costs down in the winter when you're ready to crash. That, and they are cheaper, and more size friendly than the heating pads here.

We know the drill of needing to bring more than they allow us to as this is a very long business trip you're embarking on. My last one was 15 months and another trip in the 1990's lasted 2 years and 3 months. The system is geared towards those who go for much shorter business trips and vacations, but we just make do without half of our shit. Good luck to you and enjoy your travels abroad.

thanks sojourner ( I love that name).
I bought two bottles of Napa Valley wine for whomever my boss or bosses are going to be. Should I have bought Jack Daniels? Do they have that there? Also, since the wine is sealed can I bring that in my carry on bag. I know you can't have liquids but if it's sealed?

Put it in your bags-they took sealed toothpaste from my carry on-I don't blame them for it, it was a rush job.

O.P., if I were you I would bring a "pharmacy bag"...filled with......

1. Thera Flu
2. NyQuil/DayQuil
3. Sudafed
4. Tylenol PM
5. Vicks vapor rub
6. Benedryl
7. Mulit Vitamin

From my experience, the Korean mediinces just were not strong enough. Having those things will definately make you smile when you come down with the crud.

So, what would have been a good gift for my boss? I don't want to seem cheap bringing them a $10.00 bottle of wine, I just thought it wasn't there.

seconded! and take more than 1 bottle/pack of each. I've been here 3 months and have gotten sick a ridiculous amount of times.
