I'm checking out prices for flights back home at the moment and I'm curious to know how much you've been refunded for your airfare. When I arrived last year, my PHS refunded me (roughly) 1.2 Million won for my flight out here. Now, 12-months on, the cheapest return flight I can find is going to cost in the region of 1.5 and I just wandered what's the ceiling on flight refunds.
So, what's the most you've been refunded back from your school? |

In the older contracts they had a ceiling of 75% of the PUBLISHED FULL FARE from Korean Air.
NOW there is NO such limit. They are required to pay (reimburse) the full price of the most direct ECONOMY flight to your residence of record (as shown on your contract)
OR another destination of lessor value.

My recruiter arranged and paid for my ticket here, and were reimbursed afterwards. The cost?
....wait for it.....
...and wait some more....
5 million won!!!!!
Obviously there was some kind of scam going on, but as a result there was no way I was quitting before 6 months were up (which I might very well have done).
My school is a "private" public middle school. I'm not sure if it would be different for a "public" public school. |

Did someone say "or another desitination of lesser value ?"
I thought I had to go home. I'd much rather bum around on the beach somewhere. Can anyone confirm ? |

With GEPIK it is in Article 5 of the current contract:
a. Employee from outside of Korea: A one-way ticket to Korea will be reimbursed within a month (30 days) from working at the school. Upon completion of Contract, one-way trip to the airport of return for either his/her home country or another country of shorter distance will be provided when the trip occurs within the first 10 days as of termination of employment.
The other programs have a similar clause but the article and sub clause letter may be different.

| Could one buy a refundable ticket, get reimbursed, then refund that ticket should one not want to go immediately back to one's home country upon completion of one's contract? Hypothetically speaking? |

| I bought a refundable ticket from Seoul to Prague for 1.6 million. After I was paid for the ticket I got my refund and took the train instead. |

In the past, my public school has refunded me
1.5
1.6 and
2.1
The 1.5 was out here.
The 1.6 was back home.
The 2.1 was a Xmas vacation ticket, but they screwed up on it hence the 2.1 If they hadn't botched it up so royally, I mightn't have been re-imbursed on such an extravagant fee. Originally they said they'd give me home vacay, then renegged (wanted to do it in the summer only, because the contract says summer vacay, typical slavish interpretational obedience thoughtlessness) Then they decided I could do it but I had made other plans. So I changed my plans, got a ticket (at 2.1) and they said um um and I said, this is because of you flip-flopping on the contract interpretation and they said 'okay'. Really nice of them, actually, in one sense. |

I'm getting about 2.1 million when I come back after my break for my reimbursement.
A canadian flew home last year and he got 2.4 million for his.
If it's an economy direct flight to Heathrow then just take it. They'll have to pay it.
I did feel a bit guilty but I would think anything 2.5-2.6 top end should see you ok without the guilt. |

You never taken that Mugunghwa-ho from Yongsan then?
It takes 11 weeks. Stops at every single stop between here and Prague, and there's no toilet on the train. |

If you are working for the gov't and/or in a public school - you won't get anything but the standard government book rate for the closest major airport to your hometown/destination.
The government has a strict limit on what it will pay for everything from a pencil to a flight home. I know for instance that presently you will get a maximum of 2,100,000 won for a return ticket to Toronto -- even if you spent more. That's the government set book value.
Inquire with a supervisor if you work in a public school and they can clearly state the maximum allowable reimbursement to your destination.

Actually the clause as written into the new contract states very clearly that they will pay for an economy ticket from Korea to your home country without a cap (price cap clause removed) on price:
Article 9(Contract Completion)
7.If Employee completes the Term of Employment without the intention to renew and leaves Korea within 10 days from the expiration date, Employer shall provide the airfare for Employees one way return flight to the employees home country either in the form of reimbursement or direct purchase.
This was confirmed by the Gyeonggi superintendent when we had a similar conversation in the "green room" at the EBS studios before we taped an interview and broadcast in early May.
I don't know for sure about the other programs like ETIS but I suspect that the current contracts are worded in a similar fashion.
There IS however a stipulation that they may NOT reimburse you for up to 14 days AFTER the completion of your contract. (you are required to leave Korea within 10 days of your contract completion or forfeit your return ticket.
They are however allowed to purchase the ticket directly at their discretion and their option.
