Only in the US does word of a 15-year-old deciding to abstain from sex make news. My country is messed up.
Quote:
Selena Gomez, considered the newest rising star of the Disney Channel, has pledged to abstain from sex until marriage, according to "Extra."

The "Wizards of Waverly Place" star, 15, reportedly asked her father to get her a promise ring, saying that "he went to the church and got it blessed. He actually used me as an example for other kids. I'm going to keep my promise to myself, to my family and to God."

Abstain from sex as a 15-year-old: More shit you're supposed to do, dumb asses.

Yep, and Britney Spears said the same thing.

Timberlake tapped that and he didn't need a wedding ring to do it.

It's like high schools in very conservative areas that pressure teens into signing "abstenance pledges". Research has shown that is does nothing to reduce sexual activity among teens.

Anyway, this is such freakin' non-news!

Crap!

Intercourse is down (so, technically, they can say they are still virgins), but oral and anal is WAY up.

How many 15 year olds do you know who openly announce, "Dad, I'm not staying a virgin a single day longer than I have to"?

She's not the first to announce this. That Cyrus chick did it too. It's a fad and it's a reverse-sexuality thing(?). The mere fact that they're talking about sex makes people think about sex and CD sales go up (or whatever).

They're selling sex.

So American High Schools are mirroring the porn industry?

I think the reason this story is "news" is because of all the controversy stemming from the pregnancy of Britney Spears' kid sister -- who was/is a Disney star.

My point was not that she was announcing it, but that it's being reported as if it's such an admirable thing to do. Well, no shit it is, but what have we come to that we're celebrating 15-year-olds who decide to forego sex. I mean, they're not supposed to be having sex.

Maybe yingwenlaoshi hit the nail on the head. I don't follow US pop culture well enough to know if this is a trend. But, yeah, it's also bizarre to have 15-year-olds talking about sex . . . well, talking about not having sex . . . well, talking about sex in that they won't have it.

I read somewhere (sorry, can't give a link) that they are having just as much sex but doing it unprotected since they haven't learned about safe sex or aren't prepared.

At my university a lot of the girls would go to the backdoor thinking it was some loophole that Jesus didn't think about. I guess they were never taught about Sodom.

Not to mention 16-year-olds having babies like Spears's sister and that movie.

What the hell is that telling everyone? Now it's ok to get pregnant in high school? There was Degrassi High with that punk girl getting pregnant. But they didn't glamorize it.

She sounds like a Catholic Mexican and all these ideas wreak of Mexican Catholicism.

This situation is parodied by an OLD Andrew Dice Clat routine:

Woman: (falsetto) I don't think we should have intercourse.... (deep voice) BUT I'LL BLOW YA!

But she (and I-Use-a-Banana Montana) has to tell the world. She's a celebrity and a role model for young girls. Rolling Eyes Not like those yucky Spears sisters.

I give her until she's 18 and drunk at college. Deflowering her will probably become a contest between fraternity members.

I don't think the US is the only country on the planet that does this.
They have ceremonies in Thailand where high school students make promises to abstain from sex before marriage.

In your Korean Public schools they have similar program. Students also study ethics where they study moral education.

I am glad she decided to follow Britney Spears good example.

Seriously-famous teens should talk to their agents, or parents, who might point out that making such announcements is superfluous, counter productive and kind of stupid.

It's, like, true, princess. It's like, true.
