Why is there no "u" in "forty"? It has the same amount of syllables as "fourteen"? is it because it ends in a vowel and "fourteen" does not? Is this question overly pedantic?

Honestly, dumbass, if you don't know that it's because of vowel shortening umlaut mutations in Old English, then you have no business being a teacher.

Because the enclitic on the end of fourteen didn't take a vowel-shortening umlaut mutation in OE! Duh!

And I thought I had met the height of stupidity when I met someone who didn't know that tongue and language were cognates, both coming from Proto-Indo-European dnghu. Dude didn't even know the first thing about Grimm's Law and how the voiced aspirated stop became a voiced fricative, and then later a voiced stop in the Germanic languages.

This is already thread of the month.
