| Why is there no "u" in "forty"? It has the same amount of syllables as "fourteen"? is it because it ends in a vowel and "fourteen" does not? Is this question overly pedantic? |

And I thought I had met the height of stupidity when I met someone who didn't know that tongue and language were cognates, both coming from Proto-Indo-European dnghu. Dude didn't even know the first thing about Grimm's Law and how the voiced aspirated stop became a voiced fricative, and then later a voiced stop in the Germanic languages.
