So, I'm pretty sure I'm going to quit my shitty public school job, and find another one in another province. Those of you who have been following my saga are probably inwardly thinking "finally!".
So, my question is, if I don't give a full 30 days notice, what are the consequences? |

What does it say in your contract?
Why would you not give the appropriate period of notice? |

It says 30 days, but it doesn't say anything about what happens if I don't.
Reasons:
1. This job is truly awful, and I want to get out ASAP.
2. I want to start a new job soon enough that I will actually be able to still qualify for at least part of the summer vacation days.
3. Within the 30 days, they are moving me into a motel (one of the reasons this job is shitty), and I think it would just be less painful for both parties if I left before that. |

The day after payday do a runner and don't look back if it's that bad. If you want to come back to Korea apply for jobs after your visa expires and then come back under better conditions, hopefully! There's plenty of jobs available all year round so take your time not to choose a crapshoot again. |

I should clarify - I'm trying to apply to other public school jobs in Korea.
I did take my time - I took 6 months of looking at jobs and being choosy. This job had no warning signs, and I even got several people on this board saying that it looked like quite a good job. But, Korea is unpredictable, as always. |

My $0.02
Wait till you are in summer break so you can be sure that you are getting paid for that time and not working there. I know that will keep you at the school longer than you wanted, but most public schools probably aren't hiring until the fall semester.
Just don't do anything extra. (now I am going to read all your other threads.) |

The summer is what the problem is, if you look at my first response. They're fucking me over on my summer vacation, moving me into a motel, and trying to get me to write a textbook for the summer English Camp that I am not under contract to. So, moving ASAP is what I need.
And there are plenty of public schools in the area I want that are hiring right now, actually. I've already sent off inquiries to a couple. |

Why are they moving you into a hotel?
They are supposed to provide you with an apartment. If they do not after you have been working there almost two months (now plus the 30 days) then they have broken the contract.
Just look for a new job, cancel your visa when you need to get a new one and that will be that (if you don't need a letter of release...do you need one at a public school?) |

Because my building is being renovated, and I am refusing to move in with another teacher. I'm in an apartment now, but they're moving me out. They wanted me to move in with another teacher, but both of us refused, and my supervisor sulked and then said she would put me up in a motel, but I said that was outside the contract as well. This is just one part of a huge thing, which you can see here:

Why are you asking me if I need a letter of release? I have no idea, that's why I wrote this post! |

It was a general question. I guess I should have said "Does one need a letter of release if said one is quitting one public school contract to go on to new employment at a new public school with a new contract?" |

here's some info from galbijim about the letter of release:
Quote: |
When working in Korea, there is always the chance something could happen which may prompt you to want to change employers. Whether for good reasons or not. The process is the same, regardless. If you want to change employers and/or terminate your contract with your current employer to look for other work, you will need to get a Letter of Release (or sometimes referred to as 'LOR') from your employer and present it to Immigration, in order to have your current work visa cancelled. You will not be able to be sponsored for a new visa from your future employer, until that LOR has been issued and the old visa has been cancelled.
If you are in a difficult situation and your employer has violated your contract and you want to leave, however they will not give you the LOR, then you can contact your local Labor Board and ask them to facilitate. If the employer has legitimately violated the contract and labor laws and will still not issue a LOR, despite the Labor Board's requests on your behalf, then the Labor Board can attest to this with Immigration and free you from the contract and visa without your employer's involvement.
Once the LOR has been issued and the visa has been cancelled by Immigration, you will have 14 days to leave the country. |

edit: you still don't have your passport back from immi, right? i wouldn't do anything concerning a LoR or quitting until you get that back. i don't think it should take more than 2 wks to get your ARC issued and passport back with it |

I have both my passport and ARC already. Immi took 1 day to get it to me. I was amazed. |

So, my new potential plan is that if I do give notice, to suggest to them that they just make it until they were going to move me, which is in about two weeks. That way, I get to get outta dodge, and they don't have to deal with moving me for only two weeks.
Hopefully that will work. If not, it's not the end of the world, but I'd prefer it. |

DF I have no advice to give you regarding visas etc, but I want to say I am really glad you are getting out of your awful situation. Good on you for looking at options and making the change - life is too short to put up with all the rubbish you're putting up with it. There are definitely great jobs here. Good luck & keep us updated! |

In the reply above this, I explained what I'm now going to try to negotiate with them. In your non-professional opinion, how likely do you think that's going to be to work? |
