Ministry promotes robot to teach students English
The days of hiring robots as English tutors in Korea may not be too far away. The Korea Advanced Intelligent Robot Association, an organization developing artificial intelligence technology under the Ministry of Information and Communication, announced yesterday it has begun operating, on a test basis, robots that can help young students pronounce English words.

They'll cost one million won each. Nothing compared to what Koreans shell out for flat-screen TVs, is it?

The article wrote:
"We hope that tutoring by robots perks up the interest in studying among young students," the official said. "With that, it could also help ease the cost of private education for families."

And no need for drug tests, diploma checks, sealed transcripts, housing, airfare, annual bonuses, severance....

And of course these robots won't be running around on Club Day hurting the national pride or threatening the racial purity of the next generation.

I'm not seeing any downside here.

Hahaha, that reminds me of when I was at High School and the Asian Exchange students would sound like electronic dictionaries. I guess that's how they practiced their pronounciation.

Sometimes, reality in Korea is better than comedy.

Sometimes.

Living in Lala Land is better then any drug ever manufactured. Everyday I read three Korean newspapers and go home laughing.

I didn't see this as a measure to keep out inferior foreigners. Just the ones that expect to be paid. I see it as being a purely cost-cutting idea, though with other undeniable side benefits as I've enumerated above.

Don't worry folks I don't see these robots as an attempt to get rid of foreign teachers. There are already many tools for learning English on the net and TV including pronounciation practice. Robots don't have conversations either.
