a friend of mine and his partner just got an apartment in jangsan, but it was mostly unfurnished. no tv, table to put the tv on, no sofa, no curtains, no tables. they got a microwave, fridge, little breakfast bar but the main living area was not furnished in any way. they have spent quite a bit of their own money on furninshings now.

i told them to take their receipts to their boss to get him to cover some of the costs of stuff that should have been provided in a furnished apartment. has anyone else been in this situation, and what did you do about it?

What did the contract (not some oral promise) stipulate?

Demand everything that you think should be there in a furnished aparment. Ask for a limo with a driver and a beautiful maid who can cook as well. Razz

Definitely. If they don't give you the sharks with lasers on their heads, you should hold the boss hostage at gunpoint.

Come on! Don't you think sharks with lasers on their heads is a little too demanding?!

It depends on what they were told or promised that they would have. Hell, furnished generally means the very bare necessities for provided teacher housing (i.e bed, fridge, stove, shoe closet, and usually a t.v.). To expect much more than that is asking to be let down.

I got a "furnished" apt with a sink, toilet, and gas-range. What more could someone ask for?

If your apartment/officetel is unfurnished ask for 3 million won to furnish it
Tell your principal he is making an investment for all the other foreign teachers that will follow to his prestigious institute of learning. Very Happy

Three million should buy you the essentials like.....
an 80cm LCD tv, a leather sofa, dinning room table, bed with a spring mattress, and the boring stuff like...a coffee table, bookcase, microwave, rice cooker, vacum, iron, kettle and anything else that you can get as a korean 'freebie'. Bring you co-teacher 'cause koreans can haggle wih the best of them.

Goodluck!

I was missing a table, chairs sheets and pillow when I arrived, so I politely asked my boss, and within a week and a half, got everything. I prefered to wait to get them than showing bills to my boss.
