If I bought a motorcycle in China, or Vietnam. How hard would it be to cross boarders with it?

I'm hoping to go on a couple month long motorcycle trip all across SE Asia, but I don't know the 'red tape policies' about taking a motorcycle I buy across boarders.....

I did a cycle tour of Vietnam last year. The only decent map I found was a Vietnamese atlas I bought for about 20 bucks in a bookstore. I can't remember the name, but it was something along the lines of Vietnamese blah blah Atlas. It's published by some government body and has a blue cover. Very accurate, and shows all the backroads. I got mine in Saigon, but I'm sure once you make your way to Hanoi, you'll be able to find a copy.

Good luck. Make sure you avoid the wet.

What about crossing boarders with the bike?
Also, where is the best place to first buy the bike?

Ah. I meant cycle as in bicycle, and I was in Vietnam the whole time.

I looked into doing a road trip by car starting out in China, but apparently the regulations for ownership and licensing were an expensive bureaucratic nightmare, and one I'd have to revisit every time I crossed over a border. I guess it'd be the same for a motorbike.

That's what I thought, but I also figured this is SE Asia, EVERYONE has a price. So I figured I could try paying off boarder guards, but that could be a risk, if they deny, I could be stuck somewhere with a bike, or worse yet, maybe jail?

You might want to scrap China from you plans and concentrate on indo-China instead.

I read a story of some guy biking from Vietnam through Laos and into Cambodia. That would be an incredible journey!

Well I was going to start in China, and take the fast train to Tibet. Then from there was going to go somewhere where I can pick up a motorcycle ....

I've met a lot of people biking around SEA.

Met a couple on a Triumph from Norway.

A couple of lads who were riding around SEA on their Baja's -

Try the GoldenTriangleBikers forum www.gt-rider.com

They will have good information on it.

I'm leaving for a 2 week bike trip through Laos on Tuesday. You cannot take a bike into China. Every country has their own laws. Ceck out the GT rider site. It has the best and most info. It is really hard to take bikes across borders in SE Asia. Proof of ownership, insurance, tags, green books, etc. We are renting our bikes in Laos.
Cheers
